Some requirements (from a survey of Linux tools) that I found at http://archiv.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/2001/0013/data/anforderungen.htm Requirements for a (BibTeX) reference manager (my trans.) Multiple access points, arbitarily combined, Author, title, year, journal Import and export of various formats as e.g. bibtex, medline, refer, rfc1807, ... Supports multiple files and group oriented work. Merging of data from various sources (handling different abreviations etc.). Supports various output styles to adapt to the various journals' requirements. Ability to add user defined fields as e.g. notes, annotations, order status, abtract etc. Automatic issue of (identifying) labels -- access from the editor by means of a database search (no need to remember the labels) [cf. Reftex, ptr.] Access restrictions for user defined fields (allows the teacher to write down his notes into the common database) The BibTeX format is not sufficient for these requirements and thus usable only as an export-format.
