Hello everybody, here are some questions my team had. The answers Mr. Guerra sent us will maybe be interesting for all of you. So there is one question, my team sent to me: Is the field limit sent in the sensor data? Looking forward to an answer. Best regards. Jenny Reinhardt Team of the Univ.A.Sc. Wolfenbuettel |

You can see the comparison sheet provided by Point Grey at the following url, http://www.ptgrey.com/support/kb/data/Imaging_products_comparison.pdf. As you see there are several differences between SCOR-14SOC and SCOR-13FF. But the frame rate and resolution are same specification if we use standard DCAM formats, I think there are no problems in software. So our team got SCOR-14SOC instead of SCOR-13FF, but we cannot try it yet. I think we can do it at Guerra's team because we are in the same university. How do you think?> Yuichi and Guerra. Dear Guerra, Regarding the camera we have got a problem, please read what the company has replied: "The Scorpion 13FF series is a series we no longer promote as we have found that the sensors used for this series experience a greater degree of burnt pixels. I understand that you would like to use the SCOR-13FF, but you may like to consider the CCD sensor versions, SCOR-14SOC or SCOR-03SOC. The other disadvantage of ordering the SCOR-13FFC is that this item is a made to order item, with a lead-time of 8 weeks." Could you please let us know if it's okay if we use these new models? Do think the software will work with these models? Just out of interest, do you know other teams have gotten the 13FF model or they have the same problem? Thanks for your time. Dear teams, It is time now to start discussing more practical issues. 1. About the competitions -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Unfortunately detailed rules still take a little longer to come, but we prepared some documents in order to give you a "sneak peek": [1] This competition is a first time thing and all sorts of things are to be discussed and decided, so please be patient and bear with us. [1] http://er04.ams.eng.osaka-u.ac.jp/ecobe-robocup/?q=en/node/46 2. About the letters of assurance -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- It seems one letter might have returned (a mistake of our office that was unaware of the name "PV sub-league"). We are very sorry for this inconvenient. Up to date we already received 7 (seven) letters, so five are still to come. If your letter return for any reason, please try to put the address exactly as bellow ("Osaka University" and my name were missing in the address I gave before): To: Rodrigo da Silva Guerra / PV Sub-League FRC1, Graduate School of Engineering, 4F OSAKA UNIVERSITY 2-1 Yamadaoka, Suita, Osaka, Japan 565-0871 When filling the letter, please remember to complete all fields. Specially field number four (two teams already sent them blank). Field number four can be filled with something simple like "research and education". 3. About the delivery of the robots and other material. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Be aware that In some countries some legal paper work might be required before sending the robots. In these countries, when send the robots they might not arrive if the legal measures were not taken prior to sending. We cannot be held responsible for the additional paper work (and corresponding cost) other than the ordinary shipping costs from Japan. Please contact the customs office of your country and give us instructions on how to proceed if shipping for your country requires special treatment. We will do our best to provide all the necessary documents you might request. We hope we can deliver the material before the end of this month. 4. Team Registration -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- The end of the moth is coming. Please take care of registering your team: [2] You will be asked a Team Name. Please write an email to us [3] informing your chosen team name. This will help internal communication (saying "team X" instead of "team of university W, country Y, professor Z"). Dear selected teams, First of all thank you for confirming your intention of taking partition on the RoboCup 2007 with us. We know you all must have many doubts now, and many of you have already started inquiring about further details. As most of you are likely to share the same concerns we kindly invite you to subscribe to the users mailing list [1]. Please direct all your messages regarding any doubts and concerns to that mailing list. We will be doing our best to keep up-to-date through that channel. For the time being we hope the guidelines in this e-mail feeds you the most urgent information. Additionally, please keep track of the wiki page for details about the event in Atlanta [7]. We will be contacting you very soon with more information about the competitions and other issues. Best regards, Rodrigo da Silva Guerra, on behalf of the Physical Visualization Sub-League Working Group Simulation League =96 RoboCup 1. Distribution of Robots -=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D- We will distribute 20 robots to each team. For legal and bureaucratic reasons these robots will remain property of CITIZEN Co. In practice, however, the teams should most probably be allowed to keep these robots for as long as they want. Also each team has to sign and mail to us the attached document assuring th= ey: "... will never use these robots and their replicas, or the technology and software for the development, the manufacture, the use or the storage of weapons for mass destruction such as nuclear, biological or chemical weapons and missiles." This assurance is a requirement for qualifying your team to receive the rob= ots. 2. Complementary Equipment -=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D- We need to stress that we cannot and will not impose the acquisition of any equipment toward the teams. It is up to you, the teams, to decide what equipment to acquire according to the needs you will have depending on the competitions you decide to engage and on any extra local projects you might be intending to pursue with the system. During the RoboCup we will provide a complete shared infrastructure with all complementary equipment necessary for practicing and competitions. Those teams that want to avoid having to share time and resources with all other teams are welcome to bring their own equipment for practicing. Each team will have a limited workspace were they can settle. Nevertheless we do require the teams to bring at least the robots that will be used in the competitions, with their batteries and the battery recharger. 2.a Display -=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D- All the teams are probably aware of the original concept of an augmented reality that we are introducing with this league. It consists basically in using for the field or arena a flat LCD display which is put in the horizontal position (like a table). Due to their light weight, many robots can move over the screen causing no harm -- a protective film helps avoiding scratches [2]. The minimum recommended display would be a 20" LCD wide screen format (approx. 47 x 39 cm) capable of displaying 1366 x 768 pixels. See for instance [3]. We will be informing the exact brand and model to be used in Atlanta after we finish negotiating details with the local organizers. 2.b Camera -=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D- In the standard setup of the sub-league the localization of the robots is based on the tracking of color markers placed on the top of each robot. A camera with good resolution is needed in order to provide accurate localization of small markers on a large field. For the sake of compatibility of software and drivers we believe it might be also interesting for the teams to share a same standard camera. Teams are free to decide for different brands and models of cameras, but we cannot guarantee prompt software support to each and every model. We have been successfully using and recommend a Point Grey Scorpion model SCOR-13FFC-CS (see [4]). That camera has focal length adjusted for lens type CS but the lens type C can be used together with a 5mm C/CS adapter ring [5,6]. In practice, the lenses we found mostly useful were the 8mm and 12mm. Note: We do not have any commercial agreement with that company. This camera just happens to be the one we have been successfully using at the moment. 2.c Computer -=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D- A fast computer is necessary in order to process such high resolution image at the frame rate and still have enough CPU power for the game applications and updating display visualizations. Just for reference, the configuration we have been using is: - Processor: AMD Athlon 64 FX model FX-60. - Motherboard: nVidia nForce4 A8N-SLI Premium - Memory: (2x) DDR SDRAM PC3200 1GB - Video card: nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX 512 - Hard disk: Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10000rpm Serial ATA Please note that you will probably appreciate having an extra display of arbitrary size for ergonomic and practical reasons -- for instance, it gets really confusing if you try to check and calibrate the camera image using the field display (which is itself captured in the camera image). For using the Scorpion camera aforementioned you will need a IEEE1394 port (a.k.a Firewire). For connecting the supplied infrared transmitter to the computer you will need a serial port (USB-to-serial adapters won't work). For operating system we use Linux. In Atlanta we will use the latest stable Ubuntu version, which as of today is 6.10 (Edgy). Hi, Most of the PV league people are Linux users. But the movie section of eco-be.com is not compatible with Linux. Is there any plan to make it compatible ? (I couldn't watch the movie section yet, for the following reason) There are some teams like us which are interested in server development as well. Can anyone from the current server development team describe the current process ? And tell us how to involve ? Thanks --------------------------------- Low, Low, Low Rates! Check out Yahoo!
