Hi, I'd like to ask of there are some copyright or other legal issues on the gape os some part of it?
I'm interested because for example I'd like to see this game packaged for Debian, but it is not possible if there are such unresolved issues.
Thanks for your answer
Yes the copyrightj situation is not clear. So sorry for Debian right now. But we are working on that problem. The graphics are in the process of beeing replaced. I hope we can finish that. The soundeffects are too minor I think. The levels are a problem. We started this little mission containing new levels, but if they ever ask us to remove all original levels we'd need to create som introductory levels.... But I'm sorry for now you have to wait
What about contacting the author or copyright owner? I know sometimes they agree releasing copyrighted data under some GPL compatible license. I think it would help at least getting official author statement...
Thanks for your answer.
Years ago I contacted the original author. Then I asked for the source to make a portable program. He didn't want to give me the source with reason that he wishes to make an update. I think I have waited long enough for the "maybe new release". And we will replace the graphics and will eventually have a free product. I just released it now to attract some artists for that task because I don't have the required abilities for that task.
I see, but maybe author changed his mind after years. I think it is worth a try. I don't think you can lose something. So it is up to you.
Was there any progress on the graphic replacement ? I have the game packaged and ready for submission to Fedora, but obviously, the copyright issue on the graphics is a showstopper.
I see 0.0.2 starts to replace the graphics from the original game, which is a step in the right direction. While you made clear the original author(s) didn't wanted to free the code, I still have a question about the graphics. Did the original author(s) allowed them to be redistributed at all or are they licensed in a way that make them redistributable ? In such a case, the game could be included in some repositories. Also, the Fedora Artwork team might be able to help with the graphics replacement if this allows the game to become more free.
Hi, no, I guess right now the graphics are forbidden. I don't have any right to distribute them, except that the age of the game and that the ownership is lost in the mists of game company selling and buying will make it unlikely that anyone might complain....
But anyway. I hope that it will not be much longer untill everything is done. In the repository there is already one more theme replaced and the artist is working on 2 more themes.
The main thing left is the ant. We could need someone that redoes the ant. It really doesn't need to be an ant as long as it looks cute. So if you could connect me to the artwork team I'd be grateful.
A ticket has been open on the Fedora Artwork team ticket tracker :

Hello.
I will be replacing the graphics for this game, so we can have it in our free repos. My question is this, I have several options to do this replacement:
a.- just remake the character (same shape and color) and release them in svg / png under free licence.
b.- Make a new character (similar, maybe a tux dress like an ant or something) and release them in the same way.
If you could help me with this question I could start to do the graphis needed.
Thx and see ya!
Hi,
You are free to do whatever suits you more. The only whish I do have is that the figure looks as cute as the original. I don't think that tux would be suitable though. At first the ant is running quite fast and jumping up and down stairs. That doesn't really look like a penguin is able to do that. But maybe the DSB deamon could work.
I also am not too keen on tux as there are already way too many "tux"-ified games out there. It is not needed. But if you think you want tux, I will not say no.
To help the artists I have prepared a multi layer gimp image containing the surroundings of each and every animation image of the ant. That should help to place it properly. If you send me your e-mail I could mail that file to you. Mail me at roever@users.sf.net
FYI: I am still around and willing to make more themes...unfortunatly things get delayed further since I deeply cut my thumb, and drawing with the wrong hand is sloooooow...
I don't know what is wrong, but I can't get into contact with Tatica. She doesn't answer anything that I send, so the task of recreating the ant-figure is open again
after a long pause, just a sign of live from me (: sorry, last months were more challenging than expected, examns, diploma thesis, moving 300km to a new town and now looking for a job....however I hope this will give me some artist recreation time again (:
uhm, wasn logged in....harryrat (:
