Since pd-ext is a program that gets renewed quite often, it makes some sense that a new installation overwrites the previous one.
While installing pd-ext in windows, the program asks at all times if one file should be overwritten - making it necessary to keep the y key pressed for several minutes.
An option "always" on the "overwrite file" dialog or a checked option "overwrite all existing files" before the installation starts would make the process easier.

Hi,
I just installed 0.40.3-extended-20080603, and noticed that the contents of ../extra are now overwritten automatically - which I think is good.
To make everything complete, 2 more things would be ok:
- the same behaviour for files in ../doc and other dependencies in /windows/system32
- that files in doc and extra folders wouldn't be written as read-only. or else, when installing a newer version it's necessary to go to these folders and put all items back to write-allowed.

I believe this was fixed in 0.42.5. Please report here if it is still an issue.
I think it was ok in 0.42.5, but in 0.43 is back to square one - or even worse, as the files are write-protected, they can't be overwritten.
but doesn't the installer ask you to uninstall before installing if it detects an existing install?
