#15 Lost Hard Drive Recognition

Installed PsynchX on a MacBook Pro 15" runningMac OS 10.4.10 and did an initial "entire drive backup of 160 GB internal to a 600 GB LaCie external drive over Firewire. The LaCie had other data on it but on reboot computer fails to recognize LaCie and asks if I want to initialize the drive. I am an admitted rank novice at this and would at least like to get my internal drive backed up without loss of data.
