On November 13th and 14th, a working meeting was held at the ISB in Seattle to further the end of year goal of releasing (more accurately getting formally into the review phase) an MS interchange format that represents the unification of mzData and mzXML. The meeting was a useful and productive one, and thanks go out to those that contributed. This new format is not only a merger, but encompasses significant improvements beyond the two existing formats. Links to draft schemas and a sample instance can be found at the bottom of this e-mail. They are undocumented at the time of this writing, but this will change in the near term. In parallel with the XML format, a new version of the MS controlled vocabulary is being finalized for concurrent availability. The new XML format makes heavy use of controlled vocabulary to annotate its more flexible structure. More detail is forthcoming, but this early peak into the merged format should be a useful artifact to those interested in the upcoming standard.
