Thank you for the summary, and for requesting comments.

1, 2, 3) Thank you for the clarifications on the unique id.  I
definitely support using the unique id for identifying spectra.

5, 8) I'm fine with leaving out the index attribute, as long as it's
documented (and enforced) that the index entries follow the same order
as the spectrum list entries.

7) Regarding going fully attribute: doesn't change the amount of coding
-- any changes to this are easy to make.
