Booting it is the problem here, sony have their equivelent of LILO which
starts the install or starts from HDD if already installed. So assuming
you buy your own HDD/eth0 combo you would still need to borrow the DVD
to install and then make a boot disk of your own.

People have made working boot disks from backing up their own PS2 Linux
boot disk and missing off the rpms etc, but its not really useful to
have a readonly linux distribution is it?
