OK. The support and discussion for proxyTools is back here now. I'm hoping to get out a new release soon, so: Give me some feedback please (here). Give me some bugs to fix :) Let me know what enhancements are wanted. One thing I need to know soon is whether the new nonblocking code is working properly on the older Windows platforms (95/98/ME). That means the code I added in a day or so ago (CVS'd about 25/8/2002). It went into all of the tools at the same time, so report any bugs. BTW, one thing I forgot to mention: findProxy -r none extracts proxies from the usual lists, web pages, mails, files etc, but without any testing, or DNS resolution. It ignores proxies that are of no use to you (like for those in KSA, UAE) if you tell it what country you're in. It's a real quick way to get lists to test properly with (for example) statProxy -t 0 wayne |

2002-03-22a release notes: Note: when unzipping, make sure you preserve the directory structure (for the help files, in particular). In WinZip, tick 'use folder names'. Mainly bug fixes in this release. The GUI fields and buttons now have context-sensitive help 'balloons'. Hopefully that will make people forget that I have not moved all those complicated buttons and things into the 'Advanced' window yet :-). The host(proxy) database has had a good spring cleaning too. Documentation has actually been read through and brought up to date. I didn't get much feedback on the last release - can I assume it was perfect, no bugs? :-) The sourceforge project release is at: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/proxytools/proxyTools-2002-03-22a.zip There is also a freshmeat.net project now: http://freshmeat.net/projects/proxytools/ Someone go and rate the project! :-) wayne at nym.alias.net http://proxytools.sf.net/ http://freshmeat.net/projects/proxytools/ |

Hi all, The latest proxyTools/localProxy package is proxyTools-2002-02-21.zip. http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/proxytools/proxyTools-2002-02-21.zip Highlights (compared to the last package release): An 'Uncensored - Raw/Censored' button allows switching of the service listening on the default HTTP proxy port 10080. At the moment it's switching your browsing between the default uncensored mode and a censored mode in which your (presumably fast) local ISP's proxies are eligible. It's an interesting test to set this mode, disable commStrats 1 and 2, disable any of your own special proxies in layer 0, and try to surf to www.sex.com. You should see all the 'access denied' pages in the world (UAE, BESS, Cyber Patrol etc.) flash past and each one get refreshed as localProxy recognizes it. Fun to watch! Then if you enable one single layer 0 proxy which is not censoring (your shell redirector maybe), or enable one other commStrat and one path there, you can watch localProxy slowly realize it's there and that it doesn't censor. Slowly that becomes the way it accesses everything. This is a good way to see that localProxy *is* learning, that it doesn't get caught in 'local minima' and to see what speed it learns at. Good fun. 'Autoconfiguration' finds proxies in the registry too now. Proxies are tested in the background and the appearance of the file tests-auto.txt guarantees that has completed (merging of the results to the config takes place after that, but should only be a few seconds). I still have some problems with the portability. Windows XP back end invocation, for example. I'd appreciate it if people on those systems where there are problems would assist one another - I only have Win2000 to develop and test on now. wayne at nym.alias.net http://proxytools.sf.net/ http://www.angelfire.com/my/6waynes |

Hi all, The latest proxyTools/localProxy package is proxyTools-2002-02-07.zip. http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/proxytools/proxyTools-2002-02-07.zip Highlights (compared to the last package release): An 'Anonymous' button allows switching of the service listening on the default HTTP proxy port 10080. At the moment it's just switching your browsing between non-anonymous and anonymous. The control 'port' field allows a service (host:port) now, so the GUI can control an LP on a remote computer. Testing not yet done here, but fixes should be simple. All services, commStrats, and layer 0 and layer 1 proxies in localProxy can be enabled/disabled with one click. This means that it's easy to check out a single commStrat and/or proxy if it's in the build. One might do things like this to understand what's happening (disable everything, and then enable one thing at a time), or to compare with something like HTTPort, for example (disable everything, then reenable 10080, commStrat 1, layer0 host m, and layer 1 host n, where 'm' is the 'proxy you want to bypass' and 'n' is the remote proxy to use. 'Autoconfiguration' should be able to analyze the network for anyone, anywhere and create a user profile which works in localProxy. At the minimum, it should provide a file (master.xml) which could be posted for assistance (obfuscate the addresses if you wish, but not too much). The AutoConfigure option also tests the user specified proxies in the background and merges the results in to the user's configuration. AutoConfigure accepts a proxy 'hint' string optionally entered by the user in to the GUI, to tell it where the ISP's proxies are (and the subnets accessible to LP). A new field on the GUI allows the user to specify services which are not to be built by LP when it's started. Much the same as removing or disabling them in the user configuration file. Starting LP is a bit more colorful (and hopefully the GUI is a bit more responsive). 'Start services' flashes gray/orange when the GUI is waiting for the LP back end to initialize and start listening for commands from the GUI on the network. It then flashes orange/green until the back end has finished it's build and tested the layer 0 proxies. Solid green after that. During much of this time, the GUI is fully accessible (but please avoid pressing buttons during this stage!). 'Save running configuration' now also saves a localInfo-saved.xml file which contains those proxies which failed connect tests. This enables the user to run statProxy tests and update info about those proxies so that they get treated more carefully at the next build. I'll be making this happen in the background in future. Documentation is substantially improved, but it will still confuse you if you read too much :-). Start at LocalProxy_manual.html (to be renamed to readme.html in newer versions). A new proxy tool 'cleanHosts.pl' has been added. It's just to remove some of the disabled proxies from hosts.xml. In future, it will probably do other forms of maintenance on that proxy database. All the tools have been updated: statProxy got a Socks test, and the reference page changed from www.sex.com to www.panix.com. findProxy got a new format added. mergeHosts doesn't update proxies inside a (known) firewall unless the tests were done from inside. extractHosts got a full repertoire of query spec. parameters to allow comprehensive search and extract from the hosts database. Last time, I said: 'I seem to be just about finished adding new concepts to this thing, and I now find I'm looking more at fixing existing stuff and making it easier to use. I hope that boring trend does not continue ... :-)' That has continued, but it's not so bad. I'm using the infrastructure I coded before to add new things, rather than adding new infrastructure :-) -wayne |

Hi, The latest proxyTools (incl. localProxy) is in the queue at SourceForge and should be available within an hour or so. For the impatient, it should end up at: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/proxytools/2002-01-17.zip The latest package is 2002-01-17.zip. CVS is already a couple of versions further along, but there's no real reason to get them (yet) - the zip was pretty stable, I think. Highlights (compared to the last package release): Many bug fixes, many enhancements in the proxy tools, but mainly just a maintenance release of localProxy. Lowlights ExtractHosts is still undocumented. some mergeHosts functions are undocumented. Quite a few localproxy capabilities are undocumented. Some user procedures are undocumented. Yet the volume of documentation increases exponentially :-( Let's hear what problems there are. I will probably release another package very soon - I'd like to have a guaranteed working package to point new people to. -wayne |

Hi, It seems that my announcement (a couple of days ago) of the new proxyTools (and localProxy) package has been lost. So here's a rewrite: All tools (incl. localProxy) are now in the proxyTools project at SourceForge. proxyTools.sf.net. For the impatient: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/proxytools/2001-12-01.zip The latest package is 2001-12-01.zip. CVS is already a couple of versions further along, but there's no real reason to get them (yet) - the zip was pretty stable, I think. Highlights (compared to the last package release): Individual proxies and commStrats may be enabled/disabled in real time from the GUI. This is invaluable when trying to understand which ones are working for you and why. Or when something is not working and you want to post a bug report. 'Autoconfiguration' should be able to analyze the network for anyone, anywhere and create a user profile which works in localProxy. At the minimum, it should provide a file (master.xml) which could be posted for assistance (obfuscate the addresses if you wish, but not too much). 'Save running configuration' now does. A new config called saved appears in the GUI list and can be used next time you want to start the engine. Startup times for these prebuilt configs (last, saved) are a fraction of the times for the normal ones (which require LP to build a running configuration from scratch). Debug is now a 0-9 value. Crank it up to see what's really happening in the engine log window. LP accepts commands embedded in the URL from a browser now. You can do *anything* this way. Username and password may be included, if you address is not already trusted. I think this will eventually develop into a web interface instead of the Tk GUI I use now. Many more commStrat 2 'tricks' (URL modification) are incorporated into LP. The old ones we used years back are working again, even in the KSA. ADSL is handled optimally now; it worked before, but LP was being given a bad starting point so it took some time to learn. Security on the control source is better. Documentation is substantially improved, but it will still confuse you if you read too much :-). Start at LocalProxy_manual.html (to be renamed to readme.html in newer versions). I seem to be just about finished adding new concepts to this thing, and I now find I'm looking more at fixing existing stuff and making it easier to use. I hope that boring trend does not continue ... :-) -wayne |

Hi, I got the new package release of proxyTools and localProxy up to SourceForge today. The whole shebang is now under the project proxyTools. I'll hide the localProxy packages as soon as SourceForge get rid of the bugs that are stopping access to this. The new web interface is starting - crude (and not debugged completely, I'm sure) for now, but commands can be sent to LP from your browser via a URL like: http://user:password@for.lp/perl command The new package is called 2001-12-01 (sorry!), and is at: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/proxytools/2001-12-01.zip Let's hear from ya. -wayne |

Hi, Just a note to let you all know that I moved everything around on SourceForge today. The old CVS localProxy2 project is now empty. All the proxyTools and localProxy files are under the proxyTools project. Everything is now at version 4.1 (printed as v4.01 by localProxy GUI and localProxy back end). I will make a new (source) package release within a week. -wayne |

I've pulled the windows execuatble of localProxy from Sourceforge. I think it's not too successfuil, and would be a waste of download time for a lot of users. I'll continue with that project when I return. The users with Perl installed should still hve no problems though. See you in a couple of weeks. -wayne |

Hi, I'm thinking of pulling the Windows executable off Sourceforge. I'm unable to spend the time to get it to work just now (apart from not having access to the Arabic enabled machines where it will probably cause the most problems). So far, I haven't seen any reports of anyone (arabic enabled, or not) being able to run it. I must assume it ran on my development win2000 and winME systems because they already had Perl installed. So, I see no evidence that it works anywhere as a stand-alone package (which was it's main design criterion, of course). If it's a white elephant, I can't let people waste a 2.5MB download for the two weeks I will be away. I will try to continue the debugging of that when I'm back. In summary, I'll have to pull it tomorrow unless there are some successful reports (to me, or one of the lists). If it works for you, please let us know. -wayne |

The Windows executable version of localProxy has gone up to Sourceforge. Judging by the number of downloads of the last (April) binary, I expect a good market for this one :-) Pick it up at: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/proxytools/localProxyWinExe01-09-07.zip I probably should add that the binaries are only for localProxy front and back ends, not for mergeHosts, nor any other proxy tools yet. Let me hear some feedback please. Good or bad is ok. It took a long time to make the binary, but now I have scripts etc. set up, I'll make new ones more easily. -wayne Release notes: This file contains MS Windows executable (and full source, docs etc.). I noticed a couple of minor problems after packaging this one: 1. warning message in the front-end log window each time the getStats, or 'show running config' buttons are pressed. I haven't been able to debug this yet. 2. On starting the backend, the GUI is meant to wait for the backend to start and then request the running configuration (to display the services, commStrats, layer 0 and 1 hosts etc.). This fails (quietly) in the Windows executable, and everything works normally except that the GUI windows are not filled in. A workaround is to click 'show running config' once the back end is ready to be used, and then click another config and back to yours. Not very nice, but I didn't get to fix it in time. 3. The executable is unable to handle the code for non-blocking connects that makes the source version more responsive. I may be able to make this work yet, but it needs more time. he symptoms are that if you disconnect, localProxy will probably continue to timeout (30 secs per socket) on each request. Not pleasant. Apart from these things, I think it's working well. Let me know. Good luck. wa...@ny... http://proxytools.sourceforge.net http://www.angelfire.com/my/6waynes Change log: 1. Many changes since the package release earlier today to make the executable work (*very* painful stuff!). These changes will go to CVS (I don't need to make a package - they were mostly just for the executable). -wayne |

Hi, The latest localProxy package release is up on sourceforge now. You can follow the links from the main page at: http://proxytools.sf.net or go straight to http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/proxytools/localProxy01-09-07.zip Here are the release notes: Localproxy 2001/9/7 release The changes this time are nowhere near as extensive as the last release. On the whole, there are improvements in data (hosts, firewalls, etc.). New services added (Socks4, anon http proxy, etc.) - again just data, since the code was already there. Many bugfixes of course. Doc improvements, but I still haven't reached that 'user feels like he understands' stage. :-) The user might notice improvements in speed. CommStrat 2 was implemented (finally), and (at least in the UAE) that means the ISP proxies can be used in their normal mode (rather than only in CONNECT mode), removing a layer of proxies and enabling very fast surfing. Also, localProxy now sorts hosts and services by descending order of a score based on speed and reliability, so only the best get selected at startup (the user may set a limit on the number chosen for each layer). Some code from the back end has been split out to WLib.pm. The objective is to reduce the size of the back end, and to create a library which contains routines of use to the other proxy tools. There is a localProxyBuild.pm file which is empty at the moment. Much of the code involved in the config build stage at startup of the back end will move here. wa...@ny... http://proxytools.sourceforge.net http://www.angelfire.com/my/6waynes |
