Hi, It seems that my announcement (a couple of days ago) of the new proxyTools (and localProxy) package has been lost. So here's a rewrite: All tools (incl. localProxy) are now in the proxyTools project at SourceForge. proxyTools.sf.net. For the impatient: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/proxytools/2001-12-01.zip The latest package is 2001-12-01.zip. CVS is already a couple of versions further along, but there's no real reason to get them (yet) - the zip was pretty stable, I think. Highlights (compared to the last package release): Individual proxies and commStrats may be enabled/disabled in real time from the GUI. This is invaluable when trying to understand which ones are working for you and why. Or when something is not working and you want to post a bug report. 'Autoconfiguration' should be able to analyze the network for anyone, anywhere and create a user profile which works in localProxy. At the minimum, it should provide a file (master.xml) which could be posted for assistance (obfuscate the addresses if you wish, but not too much). 'Save running configuration' now does. A new config called saved appears in the GUI list and can be used next time you want to start the engine. Startup times for these prebuilt configs (last, saved) are a fraction of the times for the normal ones (which require LP to build a running configuration from scratch). Debug is now a 0-9 value. Crank it up to see what's really happening in the engine log window. LP accepts commands embedded in the URL from a browser now. You can do *anything* this way. Username and password may be included, if you address is not already trusted. I think this will eventually develop into a web interface instead of the Tk GUI I use now. Many more commStrat 2 'tricks' (URL modification) are incorporated into LP. The old ones we used years back are working again, even in the KSA. ADSL is handled optimally now; it worked before, but LP was being given a bad starting point so it took some time to learn. Security on the control source is better. Documentation is substantially improved, but it will still confuse you if you read too much :-). Start at LocalProxy_manual.html (to be renamed to readme.html in newer versions). I seem to be just about finished adding new concepts to this thing, and I now find I'm looking more at fixing existing stuff and making it easier to use. I hope that boring trend does not continue ... :-) -wayne |
