proxychain with http proxy and http headers

If I proxychains, say, Firefox, via an http proxy (such as privoxy - which strips advertisements), it does seem to work from the networking perspective (I can access the sites through it), and the ads are removed, but other things such as http header modification don't work. (It does work if I instead tell Firefox to use the http proxy internally). Any idea why http headers are being ignored by proxychains+privoxy?
