Hello all, I tried to turn my application in Protopeer to a multi-threaded version. I created two new threads in every peer to deal with the concurrency of my application. However I have the following exception: Exception in thread "Thread-548" java.lang.NullPointerException at java.util.TreeMap.rotateRight(TreeMap.java:2057) at java.util.TreeMap.fixAfterInsertion(TreeMap.java:2089) at java.util.TreeMap.put(TreeMap.java:559) at java.util.TreeSet.add(TreeSet.java:238) at protopeer.time.EventScheduler.enqueueEvent(EventScheduler.java:88) at protopeer.time.EventScheduler.enqueueEventArbitrary(EventScheduler.java:63) at protopeer.network.delayloss.DelayLossNetworkInterfaceFactory.sendMessage(DelayLossNetworkInterfaceFactory.java:100) at protopeer.network.delayloss.DelayLossNetworkInterface.sendMessage(DelayLossNetworkInterface.java:80) at protopeer.network.delayloss.DelayLossNetworkInterface.sendMessage(DelayLossNetworkInterface.java:103) at protopeer.Peer.sendMessage(Peer.java:283) I tried to activate the multi-threading option from the configuration file but doesn't seem to help and I also do not see more threads in the process manager created for every Timer. The number of the threads are the same. Do I miss something during in this effort? Hey Juan, Here is an example you could use: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/516265/liverun_example.tgz It's the Commander example from the tutorial: http://protopeer.epfl.ch/wiki/IntroTutorial but implemented as a live run. To compile it, run %ant clean %ant and then %./launch_all.sh It will spawn 11 peers, each binding to some port on 127.0.0.1 that will run a flood of CommandMessages just like in the original tutorial. Each peer will tell you on the stdout what messages it receives and sends. You can see the TTL in the messages gradually decrease. Hope this will be enough to get you started. Unfortunately, everyone writes their highly customized scripts for live deployment of the apps, there is no silver bullet solution that would work for everyone. The parshell tool helps a lot, though, especially with large scale deployments like on the PlanetLab: http://protopeer.epfl.ch/wiki/ParShell Cheers, W. Hello everyone, I just want to announce that I uploaded a protopeer library for the simulation of BitTorrent-based file-sharing and video-on-demand networks to the apps-folder of the protopeer repository. The library is based on v0.93 of protopeer. It was developed and is used in the EU FP7 project SmoothIt (http://www.smoothit.org). An overview and a short documentation of the library can be found in the wiki (http://protopeer.epfl.ch/wiki/BitTorrent). Please feel free to send comments to the protopeer mailing list and/or provide improvements for the code. Best regards, Frank -- Dipl.-Inform. The Clock, Time and the NetworkInterface were dependent on the Peer. This made it tricky to write alternative implementations of the Peer or building anything on top of the bare Time and Net APIs. To fix that, the Clock, Time and the NetworkInterface now use the empty interface ExecutionContext in place of the Peer. Commited to 0.92. Change log: - hostPeer, tlsPeer in Clock, Timer, NetworkInterface now replaced with the ExecutionContext - Peer implements ExecutionContext - VerbosePatternLayout now uses the ExecutionContext.toString() in the logs - Peer.toString() now prints the basic Peer properties Cheers, W. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Opony do 30% taniej, dostawa gratis! http://link.interia.pl/f23c9 |

Adding a superclass of Peer, lets call it "NetworkingElement" would not change existing applications. Methods like NetworkInterface.setHostPeer(Peer hostPeer) whould just change to NetworkInterface.setHostPeer(NetworkingElement element). This would allow introduction of other types of elements that use ProtoPeer framework like Peers do, but are not Peers. Krzysiek |

Hi, The Peer class was never intended to have multiple interfaces. The Peer exposes only a single network interface to the applications (peerlets) running on the peer. The "network interface" name might be a bit misleading since it's not like a eth0 or wlan0 ;) It's a message passing interface. I'm not sure what exactly is the goal here, but as Frank mentioned in one of his posts, modeling routing sounds like something that should be done at the lower layer in the ProtoPeer architecture, i.e. at the network model layer (NetworkInterface, NetworkInterfaceFactory, Topology) instead of at the application layer (Peer, Peerlets). The flow-based network model is probably the right place to implement this type of stuff, more specifically, you could try to subclass the Topology class to have more control over routing. Another way to do that would be to implement a simple NetworkInterface which would internally be using multiple NetworkInterfaces and do the "routing". In a sense, it would emulate a multi-home node, but to the application it would still appear as a single interface. The advantage of doing all this at a lower layer is that you can then simply take a BitTorrent implementation (in ProtoPeer) and run it on top of your network model, to see what ASes the data crosses. If you go for the multi-interface Peer it might break the current applications which are designed to work with the single-interface Peer. We would need to considerably rework the class hierarchy to avoid that, which sounds like effort ;) Cheers, Wojtek > Hello, > > I'm working on intra-AS simulation in ProtoPeer. Hello, I'm working on intra-AS simulation in ProtoPeer. I've been creating some new classes and working with already existing ones. My major suggestion it that it would be nice to have a superclass of Peer to use it in functions like protopeer.network.NetworkInterface.setHostPeer(Peer hostPeer). Now It takes a Peer as a parameter which means that I cannot pass my object called Router (which cannot extend Peer because it has different functionality, but has multiple interfaces). I would also like to ask if anyone has come accross a simple (single area) OSPF implementation in Java that I could use for ProtoPeer (or maybe other, simple routing protocol). Best regards, Krzysztof |

Dear Krzysztof, I'd implement that without multi-interface peers because routing (on a "physical level", i.e., which links to use) is part of the network model and not part of the application layer. It is the intention of the Topology class to do that. Therefore, you are right, the topology will control that. I'd subclass this Topology class so that it knows which links are used from a given source to destination in your specific scenario. The flow-based network model allocates the required capacity then automatically. Hallo, I would like to create a model in ProtoPeer that will also take internal AS links into consideration. I don't want to consider core network overdimensioned like the existing models. I was thinking about creating a new class that would act as a router and work similar to "multi-interface Peer". As far as I see it Topology class will still have to control all the routing. Do you have any suggestions on how to make it work right? Best regards, Krzysztof |

Dear Krzysztof, > Do you have any examples on the flow-based model application > implementation? A tutorial-like introduction to the flow-based network model is provided at http://protopeer.epfl.ch/wiki/FlowBasedNetworkModel It contains some small example code fragments and gives recommendations on how to use and adjust it to your needs. > As far as I can see I need at least to create my own implementation of > Topology class. Is this where all the routing (choosing the path by > getLinks function) should take place? Yes, exactly. You can, for example, create a multi-network topology and connect the different networks via links (class protopeer.network.flowbased.Link). As you mentioned, this is the task of the "Topology" which you have to extend for this purpose. Then, you can attach the TransmittedDataMeter (same package) to the links to measure the amount of data transmitted over them. For the evaluation, you need to call the method "evaluatePeriod()" which returns the amount of data transmitted since the last call of this method. > Is there any problem with applying the flow-based model for intra-AS > traffic? No, this should work "out-of-the-box". Kind regards, Frank > > Best regards, > Krzysztof -- Dipl.-Inform. To simulate inter-AS networking you need to use the flow-based model: http://protopeer.epfl.ch/wiki/FlowBasedNetworkModel Frank Lehrieder (CCed) was modeling inter-AS connectivity and various topologies in this paper: http://phobos.informatik.uni-wuerzburg.de/TR/tr459.pdf He might be able to answer your questions better. Hello, I would like to use Protopeer to measure network traffic inside and between aoutonomouns systems regarding where peers are located. I am looking through the protopeer code and I need to ask this question: Can I set that one peer is in one Autonomouns System/Network and another one is in another? Can I specify what peers are connected to what networks and test throughputs between those networks/autonomouns systems? In other words: Do I have any control on the network topology and Autonomous Systems connections? Thanks for all help, Krzysztof |

Hi, Thanks for giving ProtoPeer a try :) > First is a bug which appears when you just change the logging level in log4j configuration to debug. In class protopeer.util.quantities.Time line 121 throws NPE, because object 'time' is null. It is never initialized in class protopeer.time.Event. Looks serious enough, good catch. Can you please post the full stack trace? (or better yet, a patch ;) Re: the debug mode - usually running the whole protopeer in debug under log4j generates a *lot* of output so typically you only enable debug for the classes you are interested in. > Second problem is that I can't find a description that would describe how the peer neighors are chosen in the commander example. Nor I can find a description on how should I define my own peers' neighbors. That's not documented, but this is done via the protopeer.servers.bootstrap.RingTopologyGenerator class which is used by the BootstrapServer. RingTopologyGenerator implements protopeer.servers.bootstrap.TopologyGenerator, you can provide your own implementation of that interface. The BootstrapServer will use it to wire the peers into whatever graph you like. This needs documentation, I'll try to do that next week (traveling right now). Also, it would be great to hear what were your experiences going through the tutorial and getting started with ProtoPeer so that we can improve the docs. Hello, My first mail here, so here it goes... I've started using Protopeer to create a network traffic testing project. I have run into two problems: First is a bug which appears when you just change the logging level in log4j configuration to debug. In class protopeer.util.quantities.Time line 121 throws NPE, because object 'time' is null. It is never initialized in class protopeer.time.Event. Second problem is that I can't find a description that would describe how the peer neighors are chosen in the commander example. Nor I can find a description on how should I define my own peers' neighbors. Best ragards, Krzysztof |

Hello everyone, I have a question. I would like to keep track of the neighbors, examine the global topology and maybe visualize it with a visualization tool. What is the best practice? I have thought of 2 solutions: 1) Pass a "global tracking object" in the constructor of the peerlets in the defined experiments. I believe that this solution is not the best as it may work only in the single machine scenario. 2) Use the measurement infrastructure. The question is the following: How can i track the neighbors? Measurement infrastructure only defines numerical values. i could use network address as a tag but i do not know what happens with the fingers that are the neighbors of a specific tag (network address). Could you provide a solution for the above problems or propose something alternative? Thank you. Evangelos Pournaras |

Hi Ervis, If you are using the BootstrapClient, the peer identifier is initialized when the BootstrapClient is initialized from the current network address of the peer. But you can also change the peer identifier yourself either by supplying your own PeerIdentifierGenerator in the BoostrapClient constructor or by calling getPeer().setIdentifier() from your peerlets.
