I am using in my php code a few comments with special characters and these are distorted in protoeditor.

Is this due to lack of unicode support or some font problems?

  Not really. Kate(part) handles multiple text encodings. The relevant option is present in the "Tools" menu, under "encodings". Also, you can configure it in the "Open/Save" configurations of the editor.
