The "trim_all" routine and related aren't strictly correct because the way they are implemented it is to trim the various null characters (newline, space, tab, etc.) one at a time. but if your file started with "\n\t\nStuff" it would go to either "\t\nStuff" or "\nStuff" depending on which order the things are trimmed.
