The \PDFtransition macro does not seem to work, since
the slide environment already sets up the transition.

Is there a way to change the transition style within a
set of overlays, I wonder?

Right. It should not be documented since it is mostly of
internal purpose

Not for the moment. I wonder whether it would be useful. I
will consider
this feature for a future addition though.
