Wow, I wasn't expecting so many people to turn up. :) @Chris: I expect to do something with UDI, yes. Right now I'm just trying to get through those thick specs. One step at a time, you know? @Lurkers: Too difficult to unsubscribe, or just hopeful? ;) @Robert, James: What was so great about the UDI effort compared to other ones you've been involved with? Not that I'm doubting you or anything (the history of the project makes it sound like it was a fun, smoothly-running project). Just wondering. BTW, I am not a newbie to UDI, so you can assume that I know a good amount about the project and its history. I was around last year when some people over on osdev.org tried to get it moving again, and I was doing quite a lot during that time (mostly private study and compiling a list of errata in the specs), but I let it go for a while. But I'm back and expect to go further with it. _______________________________________________ UDI-Tech mailing list UDI...@li... http://lists.projectudi.org/mailman/listinfo/udi-tech |

Hi, I randomly came across book entitled "Uniform Driver Interface" as you can see here: http://www.amazon.com/Uniform-Driver-Interface-Lambert-Surhone/dp/6132128433/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1289495018&sr=8-1 . I love how on the cover it says "High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles!" (which is probably why it only has 66 pages). I got a good laugh at this, thought you might too. @Kurt: This reminded me of the UDI Driver Writer's Gude, which Robert mentioned at one point on this mailing list. Although published by SCO, you could perhaps put up a link. The URL is http://osr600doc.sco.com/en/UDI_dwg/CONTENTS.html Cheers, Bogdan _______________________________________________ UDI-Tech mailing list UDI...@li... http://lists.projectudi.org/mailman/listinfo/udi-tech |

FYI, I posted a new "UDI Architecture Overview" presentation in the "Intro to UDI" section of the website (projectudi.org). I put this together for a talk I was invited to give at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. They've recently become interested in UDI for use in Real-Time Embedded Systems. (As we know, UDI is a good value proposition for these systems, especially for military applications that are required to put out open multi-vendor bid requests.) This is basically the Intro to UDI and UDI Architecture talks from SCO Forum 1999 condensed and combined into one talk, with obsolete references removed and a few new perspectives added. (I also have cleaned up the Project UDI website as a whole recently, and removed stale info.) -- Kurt Gollhardt, CerTek Software Designs, Inc. Hi,
Seeing how Kurt updated the Project UDI website got me motivated to compile an
errata for UDI 1.01. Unfortunately, I never took any notes while reading the
specification so today I've started scanning for errors.
So far, the only inconsistency is in the Physical I/O Specification, where on
page 5-14, max_event_pend appears in the description but not the definition of
udi_intr_attach_cb_t. This is a leftover from from UDI 1.0 so it needs to be
removed.
If anyone has any errors to report they would really help me in the process.
Cheers,
Bogdan
P.S: Does anyone have the sources from which the all the PDFs (i.e.,
specifications, implementer's guide, and perhaps even the old changes and
errata) were exported? Eventually they would all need updating.

All of the USB support in all three of SCO's operating systems was done with UDI, but by '04 or '05 it was pretty clear that SCO was the last man standing on the UDI ship (and that's as far as I'll with ships and SCO...) so I/we withdrew from "the UDI world". We had reasonably complete hot-plug keyboard, mouse, printer, modem, and storage all in place. ISTR that we had to stretch the USBDI spec a little (that whole "reality of implementation" thing) but UDI itself remained spec-pure, so it was a nice validation of the UDI spec itself. We had achieved the promised source and binary compatibility in regular use (that whole USB thing caught on) on OSes with completely different object file formats, scheduling, locking, and threading models. It was satisfying in a way, though my 1999 exuberance of UDI being key in every OS was pretty much dashed by broken promises and market implosions. UDI's quiescence wasn't a technical one.
