I let the timer run for several days without shutting off the PC. Then one evening, my wife shut it off, thinking there were no programs running. When I restarted the PC the next day, the timer was empty: No projects, no tasks, no groups... no nothing. If this program autosaves (does it?), then where are the backup files?

Make sure you're logged in as the same user as when you started it last time.
That's strange, if it crashes and you restart it, it should ask you a question about whether you want to restore from the auto save.
If the window is closed the timers are automatically saved.
There're 2 backups...
* The auto save files(saved once a minute)
* The timers.?.xml files, they're saved and rotated everytime you start and exit the program.
Click on import/export and click open/import and go to...
