Forgive any repeats... Ability to switch between a code and layout (wysiwyg) mode is critical. I use Adobe GoLive and they have a split screen view of source and layout that is very nice. Although most of the content displayed within the template will be determined at translation time, I still feel there is a need to have static facets that store the content within the template it's self. I would like to hook data-sources to a facet and see how it is displayed in the editor. For example I would like to create a table that displayed a row for every row in a table, having on of the properties that links the table to a data source and query (select description, prodid from products ) if only for preview purposes, would be valuable. -M |

After all, this is supposed to be a WYSIWYG tool... Drag'n'drop, font meddling... vital: Easy to use helpers/wizards, like creating and expanding table. vital: A good source code editor, complete with syntax highlighting, tag completion, freely programmable keystroke shortcuts... Emacs in psgml mode, but easier to use. vital: A coherent user interface. Maybe use something that works already for a lot of people. Let's look at some user interfaces like MS Word (soo much things too difficult to find) or the HTML editor Macromedia Dreamweaver. For the source code editor look at Emacs, Xemacs, Allaire HomeSite and Helios Software TextPad http://www.textpad.com/ . nice to have: Make the behavior configurable. I. e. try to make both Emacs and vi users happy... ;-)) vital: write nicely formatted source code so one doesn't have to clean up much when lookinbg at the source. nice to have: Configurable source code formatting style (like where to indent deeper, how deep to indent, using spaces or tabs...). vital: Do not touch imported source code at all! But provide a possibility to format imported source code the same as PrettyPress does with it's generated code. If imported source code is changed using the WYSIWYG part, change only as much as necessary, maybe even add a comment where the changed region begins and ends. vital: User-defined snippets which can be inserted either through a menu or a keystroke shortcut. Allow to specify the place where the cursor or the selected text goes into. To make this work in the graphical mode the selected region must be selected in a smart way, placing useful source code into the snippet. For the source code editor inserting needs to be smart: If I use the keystroke shortcut to create a new chapter, if I'm in the middle of a chapter, close that chapter right before where the cursor sits, begin the new chapter where the cursor is and put the cursor into the chapter heading location. I think this should suffice for a quick shot... ;=D I know this much of vital requirements is a bit scary, but that's what I require if you want me to actually use this editor - with the exception of WYSIWYG (but creating and viewing the PDF could easily assigned to a keystroke shortcut) Emacs already does all this, so why switch unless the new software has some benefits? Hi everybody, to break the ongoing silence on this list I would like to invite everybody to just drop a few lines on what features they would like to see. And please don't forget to state if you think these features would be vital to the system or just nice extras. Don't be shy, Marc |

Hi, I guess you would have to name options. If you think tools are always a problem, why then do you use FOP in the first place. Eclipse is as much open sourced and independent from IBM as Mozilla is from Netscape. I don't know how much you know about professional print, but word- processors are _not_ DTP programs. Or have you heard about publishers setting their books in MS Word? So please stop mentioning Lexi (Not dissing Lexi here. Just saying it's a completly different thing). Of course we should make use of FOP/embeddedFOP wherever we can. However, I don't think they would want a full-blown editor attached to their project. We can of course drop the Eclipse-based approach, if you find someone who is willing to write a useable environment from scratch (That would include project-handling, team-support and probably even a MDI). Marc P.S.: comments from other list-members, please. ----- Original Message ----- From: Pau...@ch... Hi, there are now 6 people on the list (including me). So I think it's well time to start some discussion. People who are willing to write some code, please create an account at Sourceforge (if you don't have one, yet) and let me know your username. I will need that to add you to the list of developers. Please mail me directly and not through this list. However, if you just want to contribute to the discussion, you are welcome to do so on this list. You won't need to register with Sourceforge for that, I guess. Best regards, Marc ----- Original Message ----- From: Pau...@ch...
