I think there is a bug or a missing feature in the OpenGL renderer. If you play the first map of FreeDOOM, you have to go down into a "cellar" and hit a switch before you are able to enter the final room to end the level. When playing with the software renderer (and with e.g. MBF in dosbox) that cellar room is filled with a dense green "fog" that makes the air appear toxic and hinders vision a bit. However, this fog effect is missing when played with the OpenGL renderer and the air appears just clean.
