Not just a possibility; given a PID above 65535 a crash is certain.

As you use Red Hat, please give them a call about it.  I'm sure
they'll be interested, and they'll update the CVE and apply the fix.
;-)

A workaround you can use is the fix.  Add the patch to your ppp
sources and build.  That's also a service that Red Hat support can
provide.

I don't speak for Red Hat.
