As I was saying, it must be something on the Debian box because the pass through on the router seems to be working fine.. The router's log says GRE packets are getting through fine and when I port forward to the Windows 2003 Server (which as a VPN server), everything works fine and the tunnel holds. Its only when I port forward to the Debian box, that the connection drops out, the only other log I could find that showed up erros on the Debian box was the syslog:

As you were saying James, it must have something to do with the GRE protocol, I did try upgrading the pppd but that didnt help either,

But when you use "New Message" the relationship is broken.
