Have you launched ./configure with option --with-libxml on ALL the nodes
where binaries are installed if you use multiple servers?
I use xml libs myself and I got:
postgres=# CREATE TABLE xmltest (
postgres(# id int,
postgres(# data xml
postgres(# );
CREATE TABLE
postgres=#
postgres=# INSERT INTO xmltest VALUES (1, '<value>one</value>');
INSERT 0 1
postgres=# INSERT INTO xmltest VALUES (2, '<value>two</value>');
INSERT 0 1
