We have previously experimented with 10 coordinators and 10 datanodes. That configuration gave 6 times scalability wrt single PG server. There are reports in these archives of users trying with 20 servers. So, may be 16 coord + 16 datanodes should not be a problem. But adding coordinators increases performance if there are enough clients to keep coordinators busy. They do not store any user data.
