This is the way we handle bugs on sf.net.
I think it's the only way to do it without severity field.

Like you said: this is the only way to make sure the OP gets the
requests for more information.
You can use sfbot's stuff to close bugs that did not get the required
feedback after X ammount of time. This makes life a bit easier for the
bug marshalls.
