Here''s an FYI for the Mac-Postgres Crowd...

Taken from:

I was trying to install PostgreSQL on my Mac OS X using its included
installation notes, which I have included below.

The command \"adduser postgres\" did not exist, however I managed to run
the command \"chown postgres /usr/local/pgsql/data\".

Later, I managed to find the Apple Developer Connection article
( and
learned that adding the user should have been done through the System
Preferences panel.

When I went to the Sys Pref panel to do so, it gave me a warning saying
the user \"postgres\" already existed, but it does not appear on the list
of users. I also cannot login with that user from the command line
interface, but I can login in Mac OS.

My question is, how can I delete that user so I can continue with the
installation of PostgreSQL as described in the above cited website?

SHORT ANSWER: Use the existing PostgreSQL user - You cannot see the
postgres user because it''s user ID is less than 500.
