I think the second idea is great and would make finding those problem areas that much easier. I see no reason not to do this.
For the first idea about the Err I can see how this may be useful but at the same time undesirable. I was talking with a colleague and he had a thought about a command line switch which got me to thinking. XSqlQuery could have a static setting option to turn on this behaviour, with off being default, and using a static function call to set the option on/off you could then have a command line option for OpenRPT to turn it on or if you are embedding the renderer you could turn that option on manually in the code.
