Could you give a short spot where you explain exactly what is needed to used PopTrayU with a standard Gmail account?
In one place it seemed to indicate an SSL plug-in, and one picture shows a number of additional protocols beyond the starting POP3 and IMAP4. There seems to be an indication of using the Poptray plugins:
You will need the OpenSSL dlls if you do not already have those on your computer. If they are not installed, SSL will be greyed out and unavailable. You can download an installer for the plugin/dll at https://sourceforge.net/projects/poptrayupop3ssl/ Everything else you need is already built in to the latest poptrayu executable. If you've installed any poptray plugins, you probably want to uninstall those or remove them from the PopTrayU directory as most of them are no longer compatible.

I'm having trouble also with setting up a google account and have already added the OpenSSL dlls. Gmail now seems to need a web login so that a confirmation allowing the program to access the gmail account can be displayed. Am I missing something? Suggestions? It would be helpful also to show a screenshot of gmail settings (server, ports, etc) that actually work (with the user acct and pwd redacted). Anyway, thanks for keeping this utility alive!

Mark, have you logged into the webmail interface for your google account, and gone into settings, and enabled IMAP access. To reduce hacking, Gmail does not automatically enable access from external email client for people who don't plan to use IMAP or POP clients.
Yes, IMAP is/was enabled. I use Thunderbird as my mail client with IMAP. I get a message back from Google that the sign in attempt was prevented because it was from an 'app that doesn't meet modern security standards.' Any other things to try?

If you got a pop up or email saying that the sign in attempt was prevented, you may have a virus on your computer causing a spoofed email that looks legit from google. I use PopTrayU with gmail everyday without seeing such problems--PopTrayU uses TLS/SSL and SASL password authentication by default when the SSL checkmark is enabled (and without SSL you can't even log into Gmail anyway)--it shouldn't be saying PopTrayU doesn't "meet modern security standards".
You should change your gmail password ASAP to a new long secure password and review the account activity by going directly to google's website, not following the link from the email to see if there are any "unkown" sources trying to access your account.
Connection closed gracefully usually means you entered your username or password differently than gmail expects, or IMAP or POP access has not been enabled for your account in gmail settings. The username and password should match exactly what you type in the login boxes to log in the webmail intereface for gmail. If you seem to be getting "another confirmation" you may have a firewall application installed on your computer that is preventing the connection, and you should check that any firewall applications have permission for poptrayu to connect to the internet on the ports used by your mail protocol.

Poptray plugins

As it is now, if I plug in various tries and do the test, I tend to get:
"Connection closed gracefully."
Perhaps I am missing something trivial. At any rate, an explanation of what is required would be very helpful.
Thanks!

You should use the following URL to download the required PopTrayU SSL plugin:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/poptrayu/
The URL you are refering is for the old PopTray and not relevant.

Looks like I can only attach one picture per comment, so here's a screenshot of what you need to set in gmail settings.

I set up a Gmail account using the pop protocol and it works fine.
All the information about the settings are here: http://forum.poptray.org/viewtopic.php?p=17702#17702
