Gmail dropping support for non oauth2 login

It has been brought to my attention that Gmail is dropping all support for logging in without OAUTH2 in a couple months. As such, PopTrayU will no longer work with Gmail without modification.

Previously, when I had looked into this, the Indy 10 library did not include OAuth2 login capability. A cursory search seems to indicate this may still be the case, and I may need to find (or worse, write from scratch!) an open source library to handle the details of OAuth2 login.

If any of you out here are developers who want to do a little legwork and help me identify a good library to handle the oauth2 login that will work with Indy 10, it would be super helpful!

I am sorry I have not been making updates to the app for some time. My free time has been less and this project, while fun, does not bring me any income! I have not forgotten about PopTrayU.

As such, PopTrayU will no longer work with Gmail without modification.

I just saw this and I am rather surprised. PopTrayU is still (November 2020) working just fine with my gmail account. My PopTrayU version is still 5.2.6, which I downloaded in February 2016. Not absolutely sure when I last made any changes to my gmail settings in PopTrayU, but to the best of my memory it was several years ago - long before December 2019. (=> ?)
So I don't understand the statement that "PopTrayU will no longer work with Gmail without modification"?
Or maybe I don't understand what it means - "logging in without OAUTH2"?

Hmm. I did a little more of digging and found:
Beginning June 15th, 2020, users who try to connect via "Less Secure Apps" (LSA) for the first time will no longer be able to do so. Users who have connected to LSAs prior to this date will be able to continue using them until usage of all LSAs is turned off on February 15, 2021.

So maybe PopTrayU will stop working for my gmail account on February 15, 2021?
    We'll see ...

Sorry I don't have time to work i this immediately. We're in the middle of moving. Hopefully Jan or Feb I can look into finding an oauth2 library to add support for that login protocol

No problem Jessica. I meant it mostly as a comment and not as a request for a bug fix.
(We don't even know yet for sure what will happen!)
For me personally it's not a big deal since I hardly ever use my gmail account anyway.
But yeah, if in February it turns out to be a problem, let us see how it evolves.
I am tremendously grateful for all the excellent work you have done over the years with PopTrayU.
Hope you get as smooth and uncomplicated a move as is ever possible.
    Cheers!

Until OAuth2 is implemented, Gmail requires an "app specific" password: Get one here: https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords
I'm running into some hurdles as currently you need a domain name and support emails to even sign up for an OAuth2 account, and currently this is not setup

I very seldom use my Gmail account so for me personally it's not a big deal.
(I haven't even enabled 2-Step Verification on my Gmail account.)

    Hi
Outlook.com now forces the use of OAuth2.
Any plan for a PopTrayU update ?
Alternatively is there a workaround ?
    Thanks

l've looked into addding OAuth2 support, but the biggest obstacle is that OAuth2 is a pay to play platform… it's a big part of how they authenticate and prevent bad players… hosts have to spend an obscene amount of money for essentially a n background check. To work around that is really clunky and would require each user to set up their own sandbox oauth2 host not subject to commercial requirements. So unfortunately, no plans ro implement oauth2

    Thanks Jessica! 🙂
This is highly valuable information on why it's unlikely that PoptrayU will ever support OAuth2.
Much appreciated. Thanks for sharing! 👍
