I've been testing this program out. When my account is set to check using IMAP, it will only popup on the 1st new message. Subsequent checks do not cause the Window or Balloon to appear even though the main window gets the additional new messages. Also, with it set to IMAP, all messages remain in bold text until I do something with them:

If I change my account to check using POP, then the balloon and main window always popup with a new message; however, all previous messages are unbolded regardless if I've viewed them or not.(*)

If I click the "Check" button then that bolded message will become unbold. This does not happen when IMAP is selected for the account. Why the difference in bold/unbold based on the IMAP/POP setting? The viewed/unviewed messages for POP accounts does not seem to affect the behavior, checked or not.

(*)Is a "viewed" message one that you click on or that was simply in the window before the current email check? Just trying to understand the intended behavior.

Version 5.0.15 does seem to work with both IMAP and POP to bring the window forward when there is a new message but the bold/unbold behavior works like the POP setting in 5.2.6. Using this in Windows 7 Pro.

    Thanks,
    Mark H.

You should consider this tool as dead because Jessica hasn't posted or answered anything since a very long time. It works fine as it is but I guess there will be no fixes or updates.

Hi Mark, sorry for the delay in getting back to you (and everyone else). Life has been very busy for the past couple years. I do "plan" to get back into working on PopTrayU as time permits. There may be future releases and bug fixes, but I don't want to make immediate promises on what the timing will be.

IMAP keeps track of read/unread status on your mail server and that allows the read status to be kept in sync with the read status with other apps and devices you may also use to check your email. So for IMAP, PoptrayU uses the server's read/unread status to decide which messages should be bolded. POP does not have the capability of tracking on the server which messages are read or unread, so with POP the application keeps a list of message IDs that have been viewed and bases the list of seen messages on that list. Depending on the setting for remember viewed messages, the app can save the list of viewed messages between sessions or not (when you restart PopTrayU or your computer). When you preview the messages, it will on both types of accounts set the message to read. It gets kind of squirrelly that essentially I have to track whether the message is read/unread for the read status (whether or not its bold), but then seperately track which of those messages are seen/unseen for the notifications so you don't repeatedly get notified about unread but seen messages in imap. And I think there may be still some inconsistency about how POP and IMAP are handled as far as if you view the message window when it gets bolded/unbolded but I'd have to actually go play with the program a bit to refresh my memory on the specifics. Hope that helps!

Any word on getting the main window or notifcation when there's new mail with IMAP setting? It only seems to work the first time with a new install and the mail window is empty. Even if I delete the mail such that it is empty, it doesn't pop with the next new mail. Only thing that happens is the number "1" on the tray Icon. (I'm helping someone else with this... just me I'd keep it on POP).

You may need to check the windows settings for tray notifications to make sure PopTrayU is allowed to show tray notifications. I believe some of the new versions of windows, it may be a default that notifications are suppressed and the tray icon is hidden, unless you go into the tray notification settings and enable it for the apps you like.

The Tray Notifications are fine. Still, even with tray notifications off, the main window should still appear, correct?

PopTrayU is pretty buggy for me like I can't preview. :( I wonder if Jessica is ever coming back. I see lots of hackings in http://poptrayu.sourceforge.net/news/. I hope the sources and binaries aren't tampered too. :(
