I use a stand alone email client in conjunction with POPFile.  I can easily copy the directory of the email client from one pc to the other in order to move the client to a new pc.  Can this be done with POPFile or does setup need to be run, POPFile reconfigured and the database restored?

    OS is XP Pro.

    TIA

Let me add that user data is stored in the same folder as the program files, c:\program files\popfile.

Having the user data in the same folder as the POPFile program files means you can simply shutdown POPFile and then copy the contents of the POPFile folder (C:\Program Files\POPFile) to the new computer.

After you copy the files to the new computer, run the adduser.exe program which can be found in the new POPFile program folder. When the adduser.exe wizard asks for the location to be used for the user data, select the new POPFile folder, click "Next" and the wizard will offer to "upgrade" this installation. Click "Yes" to move on to the port selection page etc. This wizard will create the Start Menu shortcuts, environment variables and registry entries which POPFile needs.

The adduser.exe wizard will also offer to configure any suitable Outlook or Outlook Express accounts it finds but you can skip this part of the wizard by clicking the "Skip All" or "Skip Client" button if you are going to make the changes yourself.

I think the only thing you need to worry about (as far as the POPFile program is concerned) is whether or not the new computer supports "short file names". If the new computer does not support these (adduser.exe will display an error message if short file names are not supported), then move the files to a new folder so that the path name does not contain any spaces and run adduser.exe from this new location to create the Start Menu shortcuts etc.

      Thanks.

Using adduser.exe to move POPFile makes me wonder if copying the POPFile folder might be the best way to back it up as well.  To date I've just been backing up the Data folder.  Thoughts?

I'm confused. POPFile's "User Data" folder is the folder which contains the popfile.cfg file. The POPFILE_USER environment variable points to this folder.

Earlier you said the user data was stored in C:\Program Files\POPFile therefore I assumed your popfile.cfg was in that folder. Which folder were you backing up when you just did the "Data" folder?

For a long time now I've been using my own "User Data" Backup/Restore Utility to backup my POPFile data on my Windows systems: http://www.sugelan.co.uk/popfile/databru.html

This utility generates a customised installer which lets me control what gets restored.
