I'm trying to get PopFile 1.1 running on a new computer with Vista Ultimate. I've been using older versions on my old XP Pro computer with IE and Forte Agent email client without problems for years.
The installation process seems to go fine, but when I try to start the UI IE returns the message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." When I "Diagnose Connection Problems" I'm told Windows did not find any problems. Other web functions are working fine. For the moment I'm using the Windows Firewall. I've tried "allowing" Popfile and port 110, but still no success.
What am I missing?
Thanks.
Joe

POPFile needs to be running if you want to access the UI. If you selected the installer option to start POPFile automatically something may be causing POPFile to shutdown. Try running the Message Capture utility:
Start -- All Programs -- POPFile -- Support -- Message Capture utility
If the Message Capture utility reports "A copy of POPFile is running. It has signaled that it is alive with process ID..." and exits with "Status code: 9" at the end of the report then POPFile is already running. If you are using the system tray icon you can use that to shut down POPFile and then try the Message Capture utility again.
At All Programs|PopFile|Support I don't find a "Message Capture Utility." There are two "PFI Diagnostic" utilities, Full and Simple, but I don't find your "copy of Popfile is running" or equivalent in the screen that returns from either one. Is this missing in v1.1.0?
I had tried typing http://localhost:8080/ in manually, but that's what displays in the browser bar anyway when I click the PopFile icon or start the UI from the Program menu.
I looked at the other forums and found a thread <a href="http://getpopfile.org/discussion/1/55" target="_blank">localhost</a>
in which the poster says if he types in 127.0.0.1 instead of localhost Popfile works fine, and to my delight I find the same is true for me. 1.1.0 is running and using my old database, so that's great.
The poster in the other thread was advised to add spaces or a tab "between the "127.0.0.1" and "localhost"" in column 1 of the host file. I would try that if I knew where the host file was.
Or are there other reasons why this is happening in what appears to be otherwise a perfectly functioning installation?
Thanks.

That "poster" was me! As we were starting from scratch I was able to register as "brian" for the new forums.
The "Accessing POPFile" link in my earlier reply (https://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=5813157) leads to a wiki page that mentions the location of the "hosts" file in Windows XP. The Vista file is stored in the same location - I've just updated that wiki page to mention Vista.
The "hosts" file is a simple text file so you can use notepad or something similar to edit it.
If changing the "hosts" file has no effect, shut down POPFile and try the Message Capture utility to see if there are any console warning or error messages.

As soon as this problem is resolved I'll shuffle on over to the other forum. Now I see why there had been no new threads in 8 months.
If there was a duplicate post, I'm not sure it was my fault. I didn't see one last night just before I shut down for the evening. Then there were 4 posts in the thread. This morning there are 6, including your 2.
Found the Hosts file--one of these days I need to learn to read what people post--and here is the part below the comments:
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost
There appear to be 7 spaces between the IP address and localhost. I added a tab as suggested--one in each line--just to be sure, and saved it as
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost
I shut down PopFile and ran the utility, which reported as copied below (after another shutdown to terminate the utility). I don't see anything exceptional in the report, but perhaps you will.
I then re-started PopFile and clicked the System Tray icon to open the UI, with the same results as before: a new tab opens in IE, but IE cannot display the web page at http://localhost:8080/. When I edit the URL to http://127.0.0.1:8080/, the PopFile UI is up and running.
I can live with this if I have to, but it sure would be nice to get it fixed.
Thanks for your help.

This is a feature of the SourceForge forum software - it strips out a lot of white space and this often mangles code snippets. Our new forums are better at handling code snippets etc.
On my Vista system my HOSTS file includes these entries:
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost
As on your system there are 7 spaces between "127.0.0.1" and "localhost" (and there are 13 spaces between paces between "::1" and "localhost" to make the two "localhosts" line up properly).
Some entries in my HOSTS file use a single tab character between the IP address and the hostname instead of using several spaces.
The lines in the file all end with a CRLF sequence.
If you have a mixture of spaces and tab characters in the same line that will cause a problem. I think you should either use spaces _or_ a single tab character to separate the 127.0.0.1 and localhost parts of the line.
I have not done anything about disabling IPv6 on my Vista system.

Completely disabling IPv6 in Vista is nearly (if not totally) impossible and there are many steps (including registry editing) to even get to the almost disable stage. It isn't simple to switch on or off. I wouldn't suggest trying it if this is your only problem.

All you need to do is access the POPFile UI then go to the ADVANCED page. There is a long column of POPFile parameters on that page. Find the one labelled "bayes_localhostname" and enter 127.0.0.1 into the box (the default setting is an empty box). Click the "Update" button at the bottom of that column to save this change.
Now shutdown POPFile and re-start it - the system tray icon will now use http://127.0.0.1:8080 to access the UI.

I suspect you can use multiple tabs but it seemed safer to suggest using a single one as that is what works for me. I am sure I've used multiple tabs on other versions of Windows but on Vista my HOSTS file only seems to have single tabs or multiple spaces.
Surely Microsoft are not assuming that the white space on a particular line in the file is generated either entirely by one or more tab characters or entirely by one or more space characters?

POPFile needs to be running if you want to access the UI. If you selected the installer option to start POPFile automatically something may be causing POPFile to shutdown. Try running the Message Capture utility:
Start -- All Programs -- POPFile -- Support -- Message Capture utility
If the Message Capture utility reports "A copy of POPFile is running. If you are using the system tray icon you can use that to shut down POPFile and then try the Message Capture utility again.
Does typing http://localhost:8080/ into IE work? If it does not then there may be a problem with your HOSTS file - you can find some help about Accessing POPFile in the POPFile wiki http://getpopfile.org/docs/howtos:windowsinstallation#accessing_popfile
Please note that we also have some new forums at http://getpopfile.org/discussion
