Once you have added your gene list, a page appears saying
"added x genes"

Please skip this page entirely

(If you enter gibberish the page says "not found"
this page is fine)

This page doesn't really do much, it allows you to delete genes (we have never used this and it doesn't matter if you add genes and do not annotate them)
It shows you if a gene name you have used is a synoym. If we have used a synonym we would like this to appear in brackets after the standard name in the gene list on the next page.

A page appears saying "added x genes"

Is the start of this sentence missing?

    Please skip this page entirely

Should it be skipped when you do the initial gene upload too?

we have never used this and it doesn't matter if you add genes and do not annotate them

So we never need to remove genes from the session? Even after the initial upload?

It shows you if a gene name you have used is a synoym. If we have used a synonym we would like this to appear in brackets after the standard name in the gene list on the next page

We currently don't store the identifier or synonym that the user uses on the gene upload page. We'll need to add that.

Should it be skipped when you do the initial gene upload too?

    Yes we decided
    i) if there was no ambiguity, the page was just an additional extra step
ii) It isn't really necessary to delete genes you do not use
iii) If a user uses a gene synonym instead of a primary name, this isn't ambiguous, so no action is necessary, but it would be a nice touch to show the name they used in brackets
after the standard name in the "Genes from this publication" box

So does that mean we don't need the gene products in Canto any more?

I actually think it would be rather nice to see them next to the gene names

It can sometimes be confusing if you have a lot of gene names...
    What do others think?

I guess if we do that should just use one column of genes? Currently if you have a long list of genes you get two columns because it looks a little better.

I've never felt the need to see product descriptions when curating, and no one I've seen using Canto has complained about their absence. So I wouldn't bother objecting strongly, but won't vote in favor because not changing the current display is easier.

Authors have frequently transposed gene names when they have e-mailed me (and on a few occasions, even in the tables in papers) especially with similar names like ppr & prr. Remember P.R. once got a gene name transposed (or wrong) in canto. If you could see the products it would reduce any chance of attaching info to the wrong gene.

I don't think it is anything the users, or even curators, would yearn for, because they wouldn't know if they had made a mistake. At present we approve the product list (but they might not even check that thoroughly). We are removing that check so it is more likely that errors could creep in.

Not a show stopper though, it depends whether the space saved by two columns for longer lists is preferable to seeing products. Intuitively I think I would say yes, but we could wait and see.

I think we talk about that. At the moment if you have no annotation for a gene, the gene is ignored while loading. But in future we might want to include all genes so we can show all papers that mention a gene on the web site.

If you could see the products it would reduce any chance of attaching info to the wrong gene.

I think the original idea was that we'd show them the gene products and synonyms on the confirmation page so we wouldn't have to show them later.

Having thought about this, perhaps you find the confirmation page after the gene upload annoying because you see it so often? I think the community curators won't be so bothered as they only have to do it occasionally. If it catches a few errors but doesn't annoy users and isn't confusing I think it's worth keeping.

If it helps as a compromise we could arrange things so that admin users skip the confirmation page but community curators don't.

OK keep as it is for now.
We will have a big look at places we could streamline later. You are probably correct that this isn't a big saving for the effort.
