Colors and background may be cropped, and a certain amount of loss of readability would also be fine... First, be sure you are using a Q8 build of ImageMagick, not Q16. Next, look into reducing the number of colors to an acceptable level, using ImageMagick's -colors N option or using pngquant, before running pngcrush. You could also do the reduction to grayscale within ImageMagick (I forget the exact incantation but it is something like "-colorspace gray").
