Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

Hi, I'd like to announce that latest version of PocketNester, 0.7, has just been released. 0.7 is mainly a bugfix release. It fixed some nasty bugs, introduced a few interface improvements, and supported more games. Try it now! Please visit http://jetech.org for more information :) _____ Changes/Fixes since 0.6: * (Finally and hopefully) fixed the annoying freeze problem. * Fixed a nasty bug in 6502 emulation introduced in 0.6. This bug broke a bunch of games. * Supports Castlevania 3 now(but be warned: it is SLOW due to complexity of the MMC5 mapper) * Supports Battletoads * Supports Tun Shi Tian Di 2(Chinese hack of Sangokushi 2 - Hanou No Tairiku) * Added an alternative key scanning option. This should (hopefully) resolve input problems on some devices, such as E-200. * Added a new toolbar shortcut for opening ROM. * Added a new toolbar shortcut for muting sound. * FPS display could be turned off through options now. * Replaced CxImage with MAME's PNG code. * Various fixes/updates I can't remember :p Best Regards, Rick Lei http://jetech.org <BLOCKED::http://jetech.org/> |

I'm glad to announce that PocketNester 0.6 is available now. This release runs faster, supports more games, and has less bugs. It also introduced virtual pad support. Detailed changes: * Runs most games 5%~50% faster than 0.5.x(dependent on games) * Added full screen and virtual pad support. Integreted CxImage lib by ing...@li... to load TGA format pad image. Notice that when virtual pad is in use(stylus is touching the LCD), the emulating will be unavoidably slowed down. You can find some discussions on this <http://forums.pocketmatrix.com/viewtopic.php?t=10065> here. * Merged external sound support from <http://www.emulation9.com/takeda/> unofficial onester * Displays paused game image. Making screen shots is now much easier :) * Merged mapper 5(KOEI games), 8, 16(Dragon Ball Z series), 24, 26, 51, 66, 69, 77, 85, 119(PinBot) support from unofficial nester. * Merged ROM correction data from unofficial nester. F1 Race doesn't has glitches any more. * Auto detect and run MMC2/MMC4 games(Punchout, Fire Emblem etc) in compatible mode. Keep in mind that such games will run slower than other games, but I think it is still acceptable(20~30 FPS on my 200Mhz XScale) :) * Auto detect and run Elite in PAL mode(you don't need to enable the PAL Mode). * Improved compatibility of "lazy updating" PPU core. More games are OK now, including Shadowgate(wrong spr), After Burner(wrong bg), PinBot(wrong bg), Micro Machines(color problem) etc. * Fixed a cycle accumulating bug in 6502 core. The temporary no sound problem is gone. * Fixed a bug of fast PC handling in 6502 core. 68-in-1 works now. Please visit <http://jetech.org/> http://jetech.org for more details. -- Rick Lei http://jetech.org <http://jetech.org/> |

Hi, I've got some report about a weird problem. Any Axim user ever had the same problem? -- Rick Lei http://jetech.org ----- Forwarded message ----- From: David Weinstein [mailto:dav...@ms...] To: ri...@us... Subject: Strange problem with Nester Hello- I just recently downloaded and installed your pocket nester program. First i must say it is MUCH smoother than PocketNES however there is one small problem. When i run pocket nester and load a rom, i can play for about 15 - 30 minutes and than my system flashes a LOW BATTERY warning and goes into sleep mode. I turn it back on and it resets the machine (soft boot). I looked at my battery and its at 60%. I've tested it over and over even after a complete recharge, and still 15 - 30 minutes of play and it shuts my system down due to a false battery warning. I've never run into this problem with any other program. In fact ive tested the limits of the battery life playing for nearly 7 hours straight on a train of pocketSNES. The only way i dont get those battery warnings is if i play while plugged in. I am running a 2 and half month old DELL AXIM 300 mhz (xScale). I tried with both the 5.x build available on the website and the new 6.0 16/03/03 build. PocketNES is installed in the default directory. The ROMs i've played are off a SD card. Please let me know what you think. I'm actually worried its my machine... But so far it only happens with pocket nester. Thanks -David |

Hi, =20 Emulating will be unavoidably slowed down when virtual pad is in use. Raising Frameskip to "2" or using Autoframeskip avoids stuttering. Do you think you'd be willing to try to fix this? I'm using the 0.6 beta by the way. Thanks once again. |

>Hey there, >PocketNester is definitely getting better with each release, the compatibility is great and the features are quite useful. >Here are a few suggestions for the next release: >1. The virtual pad seems to have a few problems; only one input (press) at a time seems to work, requiring a combination of buttons and the screen to play. Also when the v-pad is used it slows down the emulation up to 10 fps, and sound seems to eventually cut out. It would also be cool if it could be an option in full screen mode. The combination of stylus & touch screen is just a mouse to your Pocket PC. You can not click on two different places at the same time, can you? :) The virtual pad does seem to slow down the game play. I'll add some options in next release, 0.6.1 or 0.7. Landscape mode will also be added in next release. >2. Emulation speed seems to be dropping with each release of PocketNester, and for some reason the ARM version runs faster than the PPC 2002 version on my X-Scale. Maybe there could be an option for the auto-detect and compatibility support to allow for maximum speed in certain games.. more frames are always welcome ;) Performance is always my first concern :) In fact, 0.6 will auto-detect some tough MMC2/MMC4 games(Punchout, Fire Emblem) and run them in slower compatible mode, while most other games are still running in much faster accelerated mode. A few games does run slower with 0.6, such as Sangokushi 2(ext sound support) and Punchout(compatible mode). But as I've made more extensive optimizations to almost every part of PN(CPU/APU/PPU/blitter), 0.6 should run faster than older releases. Judging from my results, 0.6 is about 5%~30% faster than 0.5.x with most games, such as Contra, Crisis Force, Bubble Bobble 1/2, Kage, F1 Race, Double Dragon 1/2/3, Kirby's adventure, etc. I'd like to know more details about your comparision, including your device, your PN config, the game, and FPS :) Rick Lei |

Hey, thanks for releasing Pocket Nester 0.6!!! It works really well from what I've tried so far, especially the new virtual pad. However, I have a couple problems/suggestions for you mostly concerning the virtual pad: 1. The virtual pad doesn't include support for the start or select buttons. This would be a nice addition. Maybe one of them could be represented by the current star logo on the virtual pad, and the other by a second smaller star at the top. 2. Sometimes the virtual pad is greyed out in the bottom right (I've only recently seen this), though this doesn't seem to affect how it operates. This happens sometimes when switching in and out of full screen mode. 3. If I have Phatware's Calligrapher enabled at the same time as Pocket Nester, I can't get out of full screen without doing a restart (soft-reset). This is probably somehow related to the option bar on calligrapher. Even so, if I have Block Recognizer, Keyboard or Letter Recognizer open (enabled) when entering Pocket Nester, they work fine when going into full screen. Regardless, Pocket Nester is a great emulator and I look forward to future releases. Maybe at some point you could add options such as game genie support, video recording (of game play as in Nesticle) or wireless multiplayer (though this would probably be the hardest to implement). Still, I would rather have you work on a Super Nintendo emulator before these last changes. _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus |

Hi,
I'd like to announce that PocketNester 0.6 beta is available now :)
0.6 runs faster, supports more games, produces better sound and contains
less bugs.
It also introduced virtual pad(on screen pad) support.
What's New:
* Integreted CxImage by ing...@li... to simplify
skin support
* Performance enhancements.
* Full screen with virtual pad support
* Merged external sound support from unofficial nester. Only a few
games use
external sound.
* Show game image when paused
* Merged mapper 5, 8, 16, 19, 24, 26, 51, 66, 69, 77, 85, 119
support from
unofficial nester. That means a lot of games :)
* Merged ROM correction data from unofficial nester. F1 Race has no
glitches now.
What's Fixed:
* Auto detect and run MMC2/MMC4 games(Punchout, Fire Emblem etc) in
compatible mode. MMC2/MMC4 can't work with PN's fast lazy updating
PPU core. Notice that such games run slower that other games(20~30
FPS
on my 200Mhz XScale), but I think it is acceptable :)
* Auto detect and run Elite in PAL mode(you don't need to enable the
PAL Mode).
* Fixed a cycle count bug in 6502 core. The temporary no sound
problem is fixed now.
* Fixed a bug of fast PC handling in 6502 core. 68-in-1 works now.
* Fixed a bug in lazy updating PPU core. Shadowgate is OK now.
* After Burner works now.

Hi, I realized there is source code to PocketSNES, probably compatible with the GPL open source license, which means you can recycle that source code if you wish! Just so you know, I am a member of a different SourceForge project, called dScaler - http://sourceforge.net/projects/dscaler/=20 It's a video processor program designed to improve video quality as much as possible, for people who connect PC's to big screen computer-compatible displays (HDTV's, computer projectors, plasmas). It does things like good scaling, realtime sharpening, noise filtering, and a lot of other improvements. It's a DIY upconverter that you can run on plain TV input card. (Looks much better than the=20 software included with ATI and Hauppauge TV cards, simply by switching software to dScaler as the video viewer software) So that's one of the reasons why I have a good understanding of=20 useful scaling algorithms.... Hello Mark, That's an interesting idea :) I'll do some investigation later. Hi, I just wanted to let you know that you should consider adding=20 ClearType style scaling for landscape mode - one older Nintendo emulator does this. (PocketFC 0.6 ... you can google for this). Another emulator, PocketSNES does the same thing as well, just so you = know. Basically, an LCD screen uses Red, Green, Blue elements for each pixel, which means if you subdivide the screen by its color elements, some = screens are (320x3)x240 or 320x(240x3) which would be 960x240 and 720x320 respectively. My particular model of iPaq uses the 960x240 pixel=20 configuration (RGB pixels going from bottom to top). In emulation, many emulators use 240x240 for Nintendo pixels. To stretch = to 320x240, you could treat the screen like a 960x240 screen since 960 = divided by 4 equals 240, which means a convenient way to scale. Basically, nintendo pixels are mapped to one and one-thirds PocketPC = pixel, in this fashion: [...] [...] [...] [...] <------- PocketPC pixels (3 subpixels) R G B R G B R G B R G B [.....] [.....] [.....] <------- Nintendo pixels (4 subpixels) R G B R G B R G B R G B In the emulator PocketFC, the performance penalty is only=20 approximately 30% or thereabouts, but then you have full screen (i.e. widescreen), without much of the artifacts caused by scaling (pixel doubling, blockiness). It actually looks relatively good. Just wanted to let you know; Just in case you need the file, I've attached PocketFC 0.6 but you can google for it elsewhere on the Internet.=20 (It's an old Nintendo emulator for PocketPC's) Thanks! Hi dave, Nice to hear from you again :-) Actually this problem not only exists in the situation you described, but also in many other circumstances, especially with some certain games(Kirby, FF3, etc). In such games, sound will =A1=B0disappear=A1=B1 = for a while after loading/resetting the game. I=A1=AFve addressed the cause and the fix will be included in 0.6 = release. 0.6 will contain many other features, such as virtual pad, landscape display, MMC2/MMC5 support, speed improvement, etc. =20 -- Rick Lei http://jetech.org =20 -----=D3=CA=BC=FE=D4=AD=BC=FE----- =B7=A2=BC=FE=C8=CB: David Koren [mailto:da...@at...]=20 =B7=A2=CB=CD=CA=B1=BC=E4: 2003=C4=EA2=D4=C223=C8=D5 7:52 =CA=D5=BC=FE=C8=CB: Rick Lei =D6=F7=CC=E2: RE: PocketNester 0.5.4 final available, fixed save/load = gfx error problem =20 I found another problem with the latest version 0.5.4 with the GFX fix. Hi all, I've done some minor optimizations at the final minute, so the speed is slightly faster now. The ever best version of PocketNester, 0.5.4, has been released! All users are strongly recommended to upgrade to 0.5.4. What's new and what's changed: * Greatly improved compatibility, more games run without flaws now; * Fixed graphics error after loading save state with some games; * Slightly faster(2~5+ FPS on 200Mhz XScale); * Added quick save/quick load buttons to the menu bar for easy access; * Comes with tested MIPS version(thanks to all MIPS testers) and SH3 version(untested, call for testers) Please visit http://jetech.org <http://jetech.org/> for more details. I know exactly what you mean :-)=20 buttons are just quick solutions, I=A1=AFll try hardware buttons in = 0.6.x =20 -----=D3=CA=BC=FE=D4=AD=BC=FE----- =B7=A2=BC=FE=C8=CB: pne...@li... This is still by far the fastest NES emulator for the E125. That > being said, some games (Ninja Gaiden specifically) seem slower in this > release than in 5.3. It could just be my imagination, though. 0.5.4 does run slightly slower with some "split-screen" games as a price = for increasing compatibility, while faster with some others. I think the speed is still(hopefully) acceptable :) > 3. Compatibility is much improved (Rad Racer no longer has funky > artifacts along the road) but Punchout still has problems (it is = better > than the last time around, but the referee and your character still = only > appear as random letters. The first opponent looks fine though) Punchout is a special case. It can be supported by original nester PPU = code, but not by my "lazy updating" PPU. I'll try to resolve it later. > 4. The fix will be included in 0.5.4 final release. I'm considering to add quick save/load buttons to the menu bar, which is easier to implement :) > 5. Button mapping.
