It really is faster than gmake (by a small amount on Linux and by roughly a factor of two to four on Windows). Even more important than the efficiency question is that ninja is designed from the top to be configured by a programme (such as CMake) rather than by humans. So as well as having a lot less baggage than gmake it also diagnoses build configuration issues produced by CMake much better then gmake does.
