When you ./configure Mesa, you can specify the install directory.  Check 
the docs-- I think it's something like this:

 ./configure --user-prefix=/usr


Mine was messed up similarly for a while.  I blew away the new Mesa stuff 
and reinstalled my RedHat Mesa RPMs and all was well again.  For some 
reason, Mesa seems to default to software rendering.

to try get the version i copiled working...

Don't even attempt it. It's a waste of time. Read my other mail for more

I never did figure that out.  As mentioned in a followup email, I got my 
RPMs from Brian Hayward here:

http://www.slothmud.org/~hayward/mesafix


These fixed things perfectly for me.  Your mileage may vary.

sure but i didn't do it, and now i can't recompile it for such a minor re=
ason (it takes me a _while_). moving it should be fine...
