ANNOUNCING PLIB-Examples 1.6.1 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I made a small error when making the distribution for the PLIB examples package. This release (of just the PLIB examples - not the entire package) fixes the missing data files for the 'water' demo program. |

ANNOUNCING PLIB 1.6.0 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After over a year of fairly hard work, the PLIB team is proud to announce a new stable release. PLIB is now pretty stable and reliable. This release adds new PUI widgets, some new Joystick functions, and and a *TON* of new functionality in the SSG Aux library to allow you to instantly produce cool effects like fire, waves and particle systems. PLIB can be downloaded from http://plib.sf.net Many thanks to all of the PLIB developers - without whose tireless (and sometimes tiresome) work, this release would not have been possible. ----------------------------- Steve Baker ------------------------------- Mail : <sjb...@ai...> WorkMail: <sj...@li...> URLs : http://www.sjbaker.org http://plib.sf.net http://tuxaqfh.sf.net http://tuxkart.sf.net http://prettypoly.sf.net http://freeglut.sf.net http://toobular.sf.net http://lodestone.sf.net |

PLIB needs a better logo - the present one (the word PLIB against the standard GIMP starburst pattern) was done in an extreme hurry and with zero public contribution - and it needs replaceing. So: Email your entries to me <sjb...@ai...> and I'll put them up on a web page somewhere and we'll hold a vote on plib-devel one month from today (July 10th). All entries must be releasable without nasty copyright restrictions. In my opinion, it would be nice to have a logo that works in 3D and which could be built into the SSGAux library as a standard feature. As such it could animate too - but we wouldn't want it to take up *too* much space. It also has to look good at moderate resolution on our web page - and as a teeny-tiny button for people to use as a link on their PLIB-based games. No limit on number of entries per person - but please don't flood me with nearly identical versions of the same thing. I'll think of a suitable prize later on. ----------------------------- Steve Baker ------------------------------- Mail : <sjb...@ai...> WorkMail: <sj...@li...> URLs : http://www.sjbaker.org http://plib.sf.net http://tuxaqfh.sf.net http://tuxkart.sf.net http://prettypoly.sf.net http://freeglut.sf.net http://toobular.sf.net http://lodestone.sf.net |

I thought I'd pass on this announcement via the PLIB announce list because PrettyPoly is a 3D modeller that's been written using PLIB and as a consequence is of particular interest to PLIB/SSG users. PrettyPoly is a key technology for amateur games writers because it's heavily optimised for games modelling - and it works seamlessly with PLIB applications. However, writing a complete 3D modeller is a MAJOR investment in effort - and the relatively small PrettyPoly team (all of whom are also active FGFS and PLIB developers) have worked hard to get to this point. This is a "Developers" release - meaning "Don't expect too much" and "Don't model your next game epic using it *yet*". If you are an SSG user, please try it and report back any bugs, suggestions, (and especially) wild enthusiasm and gushing praise on the PrettyPoly users list (*NOT* on the PLIB list and *NOT* on the PrettyPoly developer's list and especially **NOT** to my personal email address!). Here is the official announcement: --ooOOoo-- This is the first, developers only release of the PrettyPoly 3D Model Editor. In two weeks we will be making a stable public release, but for now this version is to enable developers to try it out and send bug reports/comments - to the pre...@so... mailing list please. <Steve: He means pre...@li... !> ^^^^^^ You can download it from http://prettypoly.sourceforge.net. A note - you need to set the environment variable PPE_ROOT to be equal to the top level PrettyPoly directory (the dir that ppe-0.0.1.tar.gz will unzip to), for PrettyPoly to find its default python key bindings. This is the list of currently known bugs ; * Enabling the backface widget on the toolbox doesn't do anything * Resizing a window in Ortho doesn't do the right thing * Ortho mode doesn't behave 'intuitively' when you want the object to become smaller or larger * Display widgets don't reflect the current state of the system * Selection buffer size needs to be dynamically determined * The mysterious fire-engine selection problem * Lighting doesn't always behave itself then selecting objects * Opening and closing nodes in the Structure viewer doesn't work * Materials are now initialised - but maybe the default isn't ideal * The ppeScene::changed() function is never called * Cut/Paste in 3D viewer and structure viewer "fight" over the clipboard (Actually, I've *hacked* them to use different clipboard so it doesn't crash - but we need a proper fix). * Pressing the 'close' button on the menu bar doesn't call the ppeViewer's destructor function. * Rotate mode doesn't work. * Build Rectangle actually just builds any old Quad. * Loading and saving models with no ssgSimpleState's in *some* file import/export formats. (Technically, this is a PLIB bug). In addition, there are some "vital" features that need to be addressed: * UNDO * Surface of revolution and extrude functions. * Additional ssgaShape primitives needed (this is a PLIB WIBNI). * Need "build regular polygon" * Need way to control number of triangles generated by build-sphere and cube and for number of sides in "regular polygon". * Break-into-triangles and Optimise-into-strips/fans functions. * Offset current plane/line/point to the current cursor location. * Tabbed viewers for people with limited screen space. * Alternative vertex selection indicators required (especially for Voodoo users). * Merge 'select' mechanism for 3D viewer and structure viewer. * Can't change grid spacing or grid-snap spacing/axis via the PPE GUI. (although I think the Python routines still work). _______________________________________________ Prettypoly-devel mailing list - web page; http://prettypoly.sourceforge.net Pre...@li... http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/prettypoly-devel |

ANNOUNCING: PLIB 1.5.1, PLIB Demos. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In order that developers may get some experience with features scheduled to go into PLIB 1.6.x (eventually), this is the second beta: PLIB 1.5.1 I also created tarballs for ExPoser (which requires PLIB 1.5.1) and TicTacToe3D (which runs under PLIB 1.4.0 or later). Check out the new "Examples and Demos" link from the PLIB homepage. * Added ssgTween and ssgTweenController * Added puFileSelector - henceforth puFilePicker is deprecated. * Added ulList * Added VRML loader (this one works!) * Numerous bug fixes in other loaders. * Added TopHat support to JS * Added support for >3 simultaneous sounds in SL. (You have to explicitly enable that though - it's not the default) * Fixed bugs in util's directory handling. * puInput and puListBox now cope better with text that is too big for the widget * puListBox (and hence puFileSelector and puFilePicker) works with both large and small font sizes. * puDial changed to be derived from puSlider - many consequences of that change will be visible in the application. (eg output range is 0..1 and not 0..360) * PUI widgets are now 'sticky' so that if you are dragging a slider along a puSlider and your mouse slips off the edge of it, it'll still have "focus". * Added sgLerpAnglesVec3 to linearly interpolate angles allowing for the nasty wrap-around-360 problem. * Added sgLineSegment3ToLine3, sgDistSquaredToLineVec3 sgDistSquaredToLineSegmentVec3, sgDistToLineVec3 and sgDistToLineSegmentVec3. Also sgLine3 and sgLineSegment3 structures. * Added a 'Gallery' page to the documentation to show potential developers the range of applications that use PLIB - and also to promote things our developers have done. To save download time and CVS space, the actual images are not in the PLIB tarball. ----------------------------- Steve Baker ------------------------------- HomeMail : <sjb...@ai...> WorkMail: <sj...@li...> HomePage : http://web2.airmail.net/sjbaker1 Projects : http://plib.sf.net http://tuxaqfh.sf.net http://tuxkart.sf.net http://agtoys.sf.net http://prettypoly.sf.net http://freeglut.sf.net http://toobular.sf.net |

ANNOUNCING: PLIB 1.4.2 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is a minor fix to accomodate some of the *GOOD* things those *NICE* people at RedHat have stuck us with in RH 7.1. Over the past month, I've had only about a dozen emails with problems in PLIB 1.4.1 and *ALL* of them were from RedHat 7.x users. Mandrake 8.0 users will probably have the same set of problems. Get SuSE or Debian next time *please* :-) While I was doing the release, I also added a fix for a crash in ssgaSphere and another in puFilePicker. Nothing significant - no known PLIB applications see these problems in practice. So, if you managed to compile 1.4.0 or 1.4.1 sucessfully, don't bother upgrading to 1.4.2. All sorts of new goodies will be released in PLIB 1.5.1 sometime later today, but that's going to be an unstable/beta release - so if you are an end-user, stick with 1.4.x. ----------------------------- Steve Baker ------------------------------- HomeMail : <sjb...@ai...> WorkMail: <sj...@li...> HomePage : http://web2.airmail.net/sjbaker1 Projects : http://plib.sf.net http://tuxaqfh.sf.net http://tuxkart.sf.net http://agtoys.sf.net http://prettypoly.sf.net http://freeglut.sf.net http://toobular.sf.net |

ANNOUNCING PLIB 1.4.1 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is an update on 1.4.0 to fix a handful of minor problems that have emerged in that release. * The MSVC project files were inadvertently released with UNIX-style line endings which appears to cause *some* versions of MSVC to think that they are empty projects?!? * Many improvements and bug fixes to puFileSelector and puListBox. * Minor fix to NET to accomodate Solaris users. * Fixed puMenuBar so it highlights as you drag the mouse across it. * Fixed ulOpenDir so it returns NULL on error on non-MSVC systems * Changed colour of text on buttons in the documentation to make them easier to read by colour-blind users. There should be no changes needed in application programs - and most users need not upgrade if they are already at 1.3.3 or later. ----------------------------- Steve Baker ------------------------------- HomeMail : <sjb...@ai...> WorkMail: <sj...@li...> HomePage : http://web2.airmail.net/sjbaker1 Projects : http://plib.sf.net http://tuxaqfh.sf.net http://tuxkart.sf.net http://agtoys.sf.net http://prettypoly.sf.net http://freeglut.sf.net http://toobular.sf.net |

ANNOUNCING PLIB 1.4.0 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is the first new stable release of PLIB in about a year - so much has gone into improving stability and increasing functionality. There are quite a few last-minute changes since the final 1.3.3 beta release - so it's probably worth the effort to grab a new copy. Many thanks to all who helped get this release out the door. ----------------------------- Steve Baker ------------------------------- HomeMail : <sjb...@ai...> WorkMail: <sj...@li...> HomePage : http://web2.airmail.net/sjbaker1 Projects : http://plib.sf.net http://tuxaqfh.sf.net http://tuxkart.sf.net http://agtoys.sf.net http://prettypoly.sf.net http://freeglut.sf.net http://toobular.sf.net |

ANNOUNCING PLIB 1.3.3 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is the UTTERLY final beta version before we go to 1.4.0 (hopefully on Wednesday at around midnight GMT). Application authors are strongly encouraged to test this release against their programs because I don't expect to make any changes at all to this version other than perhaps to update the Borland C++ project files if we receive new ones in time and change the version number! Very little changed between 1.3.2 and 1.3.3 - a few minor cleanup operations and just one significant change to puDial's in PUI (please refer to the PUI documentation if you are using puDial's). There have been a few changes to the 'complex' example program to make it a bit easier on the eyes (Green widgets on a Red background! Does anyone want to admit to a severe case of Daltonism?!) MANY thanks to all who participated in the final cleanup exercise - the end is now in sight! ----------------------------- Steve Baker ------------------------------- HomeMail : <sjb...@ai...> WorkMail: <sj...@li...> HomePage : http://web2.airmail.net/sjbaker1 Projects : http://plib.sf.net http://tuxaqfh.sf.net http://tuxkart.sf.net http://agtoys.sf.net http://prettypoly.sf.net http://freeglut.sf.net http://toobular.sf.net |

Announcing PLIB 1.3.2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is the first PLIB release since September 2000 and although it's another odd-numbered (ie potentially unstable) release, it is in feature-freeze and will become PLIB 1.4.0 within the next week or so. If you are a PLIB application author, you should now port your PLIB code to 1.3.2 and check that it's all working correctly so that we can get any last-minute fixes into 1.4.0. The MAJOR non-reverse compatible change with 1.3.2 onwards is that the SSG loader functions now require a new argument to pass 'ssgLoaderOptions' rather than the old ad-hoc collection of function hooks. Reference counting has also been added to ssgState objects so if you load your textures and states once at the start of your code and delete the models as you progress from one level of the game to another (As TuxKart and TuxAQFH do for example) then you'll need to manually 'ref()' each state and texture as you create it in order to avoid them being deleted when the last model that refers to them is removed. There are *MANY* significant enhancements and bug fixes. You can grab PLIB 1.3.2 at http://plib.sf.net (notice that 'sourceforge' can now be abbreviated to 'sf' in URL's). ----------------------------- Steve Baker ------------------------------- HomeMail : <sjb...@ai...> WorkMail: <sj...@li...> HomePage : http://web2.airmail.net/sjbaker1 Projects : http://plib.sf.net http://tuxaqfh.sf.net http://tuxkart.sf.net http://agtoys.sf.net http://prettypoly.sf.net http://freeglut.sf.net http://toobular.sf.net |

ANNOUNCING PLIB 1.3.1. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CHANGES SINCE 1.3.0: * Changed License conditions to specifically permit use of PLIB outside of LGPL for embedded applications. * New Aux library has 'ssga' classes to add high level shapes such as cylinders, cubes and spheres (two different kinds). * Lots of new example programs. * PUI enhanced for support for multiple windows, puFilePicker and puListBox * Completely new audio driver for SGI's IRIX. * Added a loader for the Quake 'MD2' format. It seems to work amazingly well. * Added 'UL' library for general utility functions. libplibul currently contains: portable clock/timer low level networking code, directory searching routines. * Over 100 other significant improvements and bug fixes - there is a very detailed change list in the file 'CHANGES' in the distribution. You can download PLIB from the usual place: http://plib.sourceforge.net Enjoy! |

Just in case anyone didn't catch the announcement, Sourceforge will be down from 10pm Saturday Sept 22nd to 8am Sunday (Pacific time). They are moving all their servers and need a little down-time. Hence, access to: http://plib.sourceforge.net http://tuxaqfh.sourceforge.net http://tuxkart.sourceforge.net http://prettypoly.sourceforge.net - and all the associated mailing lists (and anything else at Sourceforge for that matter) will be impossible for that 10 hour period. A good time for all those 60,000 hard working OpenSource developers to throw an enormous party - or (more likely) catch up on a little well-needed sleep! |

As agreed - and after a 30 day comment period has expired with no contradictory posts - I have added this to the terms of the PLIB license. It doesn't take away any rights from existing or future PLIB users but it slightly relaxes the LGPL license restrictions to allow people to use PLIB in embedded systems (like cellphones and game consoles) where the conditions imposed by the LGPL are truly impossible to meet - even with the best efforts of all involved. The addendum says: | As a special exception Steve Baker gives permission to link these | libraries with proprietary software and distribute the resulting | executable without including that proprietary code in any distribution | as the LGPL would normally dictate. | | This exception is ONLY granted in the case of an embedded system in | which there is no possibility of an end user re-linking or recompiling | against new versions of this library that may appear in the future. I trust this isn't too controversial - and in any case, it's a done deal! -- Steve Baker HomeEmail: <sjb...@ai...> WorkEmail: <sj...@li...> HomePage : http://web2.airmail.net/sjbaker1 Projects : http://plib.sourceforge.net http://tuxaqfh.sourceforge.net http://tuxkart.sourceforge.net http://prettypoly.sourceforge.net |

ANNOUNCING PLIB 1.2.0 and 1.3.0 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is one of those rare occasions when there is nothing significantly new in the release - but we are incrementing the version number to indicate stability. Both PLIB 1.2.0 and 1.3.0 are essentially identical to 1.1.12. From today onwards: 1.0.xx is officially obsolete - please don't use it, rely on it or distribute it. If you find an application that needs it, please ask the author to upgrade. 1.1.xx is also officially obsolete - same deal. 1.2.0 is the new 'stable' release, it's feature set is frozen and there won't be a 1.2.1 unless we have to fix a critical bug. This is the "known good" version that Linux distro's should ship, application developers should build against and users should download. 1.3.0 is the first of the new 'experimental' versions - that's where all the cutting edge new development will be done, new features will be added - new bugs also. Ultimately there will be a 1.4.0 which will once again be stable. Thanks to the many people who helped to push 1.2.0 screaming and kicking into the world. There is no great glamor in working on PLIB - but several quality projects would not be where they are without your help. -- Steve Baker HomeEmail: <sjb...@ai...> WorkEmail: <sj...@li...> HomePage : http://web2.airmail.net/sjbaker1 Projects : http://plib.sourceforge.net http://tuxaqfh.sourceforge.net http://tuxkart.sourceforge.net http://prettypoly.sourceforge.net |

ANNOUNCING PLIB V1.1.12 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It's been a *long* time since we had a PLIB release (partly because it's now available under CVS - and partly because I've been too busy to do it). This release will probably be the last PLIB prior to the new, 1.2.xx stable release - so please check it carefully against your applications code and mail the PLIB-developer's list if there are any problems. I suspect that the 'CHANGES' file is wildly inaccurate - but here are the changes I know about and can remember: * Fixed some compilation problems for Macintosh/Codewarrior which treats 'xor' and 'or' as reserved words!! Yikes! Thanks to Darrell Walisser for that piece of nasty news. * Fixed some problems in slMODinst.cxx that were causing compilation warnings under windoze (thanks to Bram Stolk) * Changed SL to open audio devices with O_NONBLOCK - thanks to Trent Gamblin for spotting this one. * Added configure.in check for libdl to cover bug in ld.so under Linux. Application programs under Linux need to link to libdl.so in order to work around this. Ben Woodhead <za...@is...> added this. * Added Borland project files, thanks to Dave Heil for contributing these. * Swapped order of multiplication in sgMultMat4. Thanks to Lucas Ackerman for spotting this one. * Added a unique ID field to every node in the scene graph. This helps out some picking algorithms in PPE. * Added some more ifdefs to make PLIB Audio/JS components to make them work under NetBSD. (They already work with FreeBSD and OpenBSD). Many thanks to Rene Hexel! * Fixed a ref() problem with ssgVtxTable::clone - thanks to Will Weisser for catching that one! * Added checks to ensure that a valid OpenGL rendering context exists before ssgInit/puiInit/fnt-loaders are called. * Added Dave McClurg's ASE loader and matching writer. If you use the new 'ssgLoad()/ssgSave()' functions, it'll "just work" - if you prefer you can call ssgLoadASE/ssgSaveASE analogously to all the other loaders. * Several fixes to the quaternion code in SG were contributed by "Negative0" <neg...@ea...> (Who was that masked man?) -- Steve Baker http://web2.airmail.net/sjbaker1 sjb...@ai... Lucas Ackerman spotted a serious problem in the PLIB/SG library. The order of the arguments to sgMultMat4 were reversed so it implemented dst = B * A rather than dst = A * B as advertised. I've fixed this in the latest CVS copy of PLIB - and it'll be in the upcoming 1.2 release. I'm taking the unusual step of mentioning this on the PLIB-ANNOUNCE list because there is a very real chance that some existing programs could be broken by this fix. If your program *is* affected, you will either have to depend on a particular version of PLIB being loaded (NASTY!) or you should change your sources to use sgPreMultMat4 or sgPostMultMat4 which are unaffected by the change. In that way, your code will work OK with earlier versions of PLIB as well as the upcoming PLIB 1.2. Sorry about this. -- Steve Baker http://web2.airmail.net/sjbaker1 sjb...@ai... Mailing List Move. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Tux_AQFH and PLIB mailing lists are moving to the SourceForge servers. I have re-subscribed everyone who was subscribed to the following lists: pli...@wo... pli...@wo... pli...@wo... tux...@wo... tux...@wo... tux...@wo... To the corresponding new lists: pli...@li... pli...@li... pli...@li... tux...@li... tux...@li... tux...@li... (Notice that there is no longer an underscore in tuxaqfh - that's due to a bug in the SourceForge software). To post to the list, just email to the lists above. The 'announce' lists are heavily moderated (by me) - so they'll basically only contain major announcements. To subscribe, unsubscribe, switch to digest-only mode or visit the (currently empty!) archives, go to: http://lists.sourceforge.net/mailman/listinfo/plib-devel http://lists.sourceforge.net/mailman/listinfo/plib-users http://lists.sourceforge.net/mailman/listinfo/plib-announce http://lists.sourceforge.net/mailman/listinfo/tuxaqfh-devel http://lists.sourceforge.net/mailman/listinfo/tuxaqfh-users http://lists.sourceforge.net/mailman/listinfo/tuxaqfh-announce My next step is to relocate the PLIB and Tux_AQFH web sites to SourceForge - at which point, all this information will be available from the web site. Sorry for the incovenience. Steve. -- Steve Baker http://web2.airmail.net/sjbaker1 sjb...@ai... (home) http://www.woodsoup.org/~sbaker sj...@ht... (work) |
