I just didn't want to see the poor guy flamed for following instructions. :) The first theory was that another program had the device open (most motherboard sound drivers don't support more than one stream at a time). But since the audio device does indeed generate noise, the problem seems to me to be either a plib or a driver bug. I know that plib does a few ioctl's on the device that "cat" (of course) does not.
