The problem cleared up when I did a make/clean on my PLIB library.
Thought I had earlier, but evidently not since the compiler last
upgraded. A minor embarrassment.
Make on the examples didn't complete. I died on a problem with water.cxx
that is, Norman tells me, a known problem. So, later today I'll apply
the patch that excludes water and proceed.
