I can understand why Plib - Developers/Users are annoyed about the problems with Plib and Redhat and that includes me, but lets face it there: will always be bugs and wrong decisions. And other Distributions had their share of problems as well. Suse for example messed something up with X binary/lib versions which caused problems with SDL. Something I had to find out the hard way when trying to demonstrate a SDL application to a customer on one of their computers which was using this version of Suse. Not one of my pleasant memories... I really dislike statements like "This or that high prestige group has done that" This is more something I expect from a politician than from someone on an oss mailinglist. I dont know anybody who could speak for a group so vague as "power users" Redhat has done quite a lot for Linux imho and they are free to choose any Compiler version they like and no matter what teir decision is, I dont think it justifies an insult like "becoming another microsoft", which is probably the worst insult possible in the free software world. (If anybody can come up with a better one , tell us :) So can we just calm down and keep this type of stuff at the absolut minimum on the mailinglist ? This would be rather positive for the Signal/Noise ratio. We can of course meet on IRC to flame about this, thats where holy distributions wars belong. Its also a lot more fun in realtime :) |
