Actually, Pieter sent more info[1] the flightgear-users list saying: "To get my direct rendering to work, I installed redhat packages on my mandrake system ..." Aha!! That's actually good news. Mandrake is not broken as it first seemed from Pieter's report. :-) And to set the record straight, Mandrake does *not* start with Red Hat packages. It did in it's infancy, but hasn't done so since the Mdk 5.x releases, IIRC. They do their own packages from scratch now.
