Hmmm - I wonder if there is something electrically 'funny' - like the
wire providing voltage to the joystick to the PC is kinda skimpy and
when you try to pull up four input pins at once, the voltage drops enough
to prevent the port from seeing it as 1-bits.

That's rather a long-shot - but I simply can't imagine how printf could
be broken in such an obvious way.
