I tried the above...curious thing, my cygwin's make is very broken.  It will 
happily create an empty libplibpu.a even though there's not a single .o file 
in the directory.

Maybe I'll install Linux.  I've been messing around with cygwin for a week, 
but I haven't gotten close to having any fun :(
