Have you emailed and asked if your could join their team?

Some developers like to get things working nicely before they
release the source code.

I'm actually like that.  Neither TuxAQFH nor TuxKart were released
as OpenSource until they were actually working.

It's nice not to have outside interference and endless questions
about the code until it's more or less ready to go.

But I understand your point of view too.
