Thanks for help, Stephen! My joystick works just nice in the JS example
as well now, and I'm one happy hacker. (If only I got my OpenGL
working too ;) 

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but it was a simple permission
problem.  I had overlooked the obvious :) Btw, do people often
have problems with the joystick support? Maybe the example could
have more diagnostic features, like in my case it could have said:
"No permissions to use joystick /dev/js0.  The permissions on file
/dev/js0 are "rw-rw----" - is this correct?"
