Yes - I'm sorry about that - we are in the process of rewriting and reorganizing the examples package (you can see it's about 10 revisions behind PLIB itself) - so these problems are not entirely unexpected! You should find that if you 'cd' down into the examples/<libraryname> directory and do a 'make' there, that more of the examples programs will build - but some of them (notably that Quaternion test program) won't build no matter what. Actually, the Quaternion test was never meant to be in the distribution at all - it was just something I was testing with and didn't intend to ship out. The version of the examples suite that's in the current CVS version of PLIB *does* compile against the version of PLIB that's in CVS - but that's in the unstable development branch and you might not want to go there.
