This sounds like trouble with your local setup. Have a look at
'config.log', jump to the end and search backwards for  -lGL

I know - and I'm wondering, because the whole FlightGear/OSG stuff
builds wihout hassle on my (to be precies: my wife's) Debian
Etch/AMD64. Maybe you simply forgot to install the libgl1-mesa-dev
package,
