It appears that this breackage is intentionally ....

You'll see a track of the changes in the "BSD analog joystick fixes"
and the recent "New release" thread. This part is known to be broken
but nobody dares to touch it and fix that - neither the contributor nor
the committer.
Simply revert Makefile.am to '-D 2006-01-02' and you'll get a working
copy.
