Hello, This is my very first time posting to this mailing list, as I am about to start using Player/Stage - so I'm a complete newbie, but a newbie with a mission. I will be using a Pioneer 2-DX by MobileRobots, and I'm running Player 2.1.3, Stage 3.1.0 on Ubuntu 9.04/2.6.28-14. I've already installed them successfully (or so it seems...). My goal is to use a localization driver, such as amcl with this robot, and I want to get some show-stopping doubts out of the way: * Is it even possible? Can I, with the hardware I have, use player and amcl or another localization algorithm? * How hard is it going to be? What problems will I likely run into, and how should I avoid them? The reason I'm not using MobileRobot's own localization library, SonARNL, is that I haven't had very good results with it on field tests we've done. As it is closed source, I haven't got the option of tweaking it. My next step will be integrating Player's localization with another, vision-based method my group is researching. Any suggestions or comments would be very much appreciated. I've tried to be specific, but if there's an important bit of information I forgot to mention, please, do not hesitate to ask. Thanks in advance! Pedro d'Aquino |

You should be able to easily use Player's amcl driver on your Pioneer-2DX, assuming that you have a laser of some sort. amcl was originally developed for exactly that robot, equipped with a SICK LMS-200. brian. |

Hi, Thanks for the quick reply. Hm, so that is bad news. I should have been more specific: my robot is sonar-only. I didn't mention it before because I was under the impression all P2DX weren't equipped with lasers. Any hope? A patch was contributed long ago to enable it, but there were some hiccups and it didn't get integrated. That's to say that it's possible to use amcl with sonar, but it would require some development effort. brian. |

If it's the truth what Toby said that laser, ir and sonar interfaces are going to be dropped, amcl will have to be rewritten to require ranger interface and p2os driver will have to be rewritten to provide ranger interface for sonar device. Also sicklms200 laser driver will have to be rewritten to provide ranger interface. All those things will match. I wonder how much effort it will cost. Hm, that's sad news (this was supposed to be the easy part of the project). I wonder how much trouble would it be to develop it. I have intermediate/good knowledge of C++, but know absolutely nothing about Player. Do you think it is feasable? If so, how do I start?! I feel a bit lost. Thanks! Hi all! one year ago I developed a localization algorithm using Monte Carlo method with a Pioneer 2-DX over Ubuntu. Here [1] you've the whole project called GuideRobot (written on C language), where you can download what you want. Furthermore, we've a software platform "between" guiderobot software and pioneer hardware called JdeRobot [2] (also it's free software under GPL terms). I hope this help you, Julio [1] http://jde.gsyc.es/index.php/GuideRobot [2] http://jde.gsyc.es -- Julio Vega | http://robotica-urjc.es/jmvega Pedro d'Aquino wrote: > > "There is a sonar model in amcl, but it isn't enabled now, and hasn't > been for quite some time. Thanks, Julio. From what I've seen in the pages you've linked to, GuideRobot uses a laser as its main sensor, right? That's a problem for us, as we're using a sonar. Anyway, could anyone please point me to this patch that contained the sonar model for amcl? Thanks!
