Are there other tools for this? Yes, I've written videoplayer tool - a small player client that shows image from camera device in gtk+ window (raw or compressed data). It's available here: http://king.net.pl/playercontrib/videoplayer-20050315.tar.gz Notice that you have to apply patches that I've released both for camera1394 device and player client library before you compile videoplayer.
